I had barely come across the word "remote job" until COVID-19 struck. We were on complete lockdown, and companies had to switch to working from home. A lot of people, including myself thought it was impossible until it became something that is still in vogue even after COVID-19 went. Within that short time of working remotely, a lot of people saw the possibility of doing multiple jobs and didn't hesitate to tap into the opportunities working remotely was offering.
It was a huge deal to be able to work from anywhere as long as you have a stable internet and PC. It is flexible and has help people combine multiple jobs.
While I was growing up, it confused me why my dad did two jobs. I thought life was about getting just one job after school and getting promotions that would come with huge money, but as I grew, I realized that having multiple jobs is a trend for people with lots of responsibilities, but those jobs back then weren't remote jobs.
I went to an event some time ago, and as part of the catering crew, I was able to interact with some servers who were invited by someone else. Among them was this guy who arrived late, and while he was being scolded, he said a proverb that means a job isn't enough to be successful these days. After the event, this same guy was in a hurry to leave, and I became really curious.
One thing led to another, and we started chatting while he waited to be paid. He works remotely during the day and serves at the bar at night. Whenever events like that come up and the pay is good, he works as a server.
I wondered how challenging it could be for him to rush through all these jobs, but he was really comfortable with them because his remote jobs weren't stressful. Having multiple jobs is quite important now due to the harsh economy. Unless you are earning millions of dollars monthly and making it easy to combine multiple jobs, you have to be working remotely.
The pay from one job isn't enough anymore, and everyone has taken one or even multiple jobs just to make sure that they are financially stable. I support the idea of having multiple jobs too, but when all these jobs are strenuous, it can cause great harm to one's health, which wouldn't matter how much you earn anymore because a huge percentage of the earnings might end up as payment for hospital bills.
The internet has made having alternative jobs or working remotely quite easy for us, and many of us are enjoying the benefits today.
There are lots of remote jobs out there, and it's so annoying that only a few are available for Nigerians due to some reasons. One of the reasons is that Nigerians can't receive money through PayPal, which is the major option available on many of those freelance websites. Someone told me recently that they now have a way of receiving money, but I doubt it and have not looked into it yet.
If we look around, many of us can point out the benefits of working remotely, and I hope to tap into that opportunity soon with my skills.
