As if going for a swim, three women waded swiftly into the Odo Ago, a stagnant stream in the Ipokia Local Government area of Ogun State on Sunday. Suspended in the crook of their arms were large baskets of Iyere, the seeds from the locust tree used in the production of locust beans, called Iru in the language of the locals. Engaged to wash the seeds, the women are paid a token of N100 for their many trips into the smelly pond, which has become a ‘factory’ for locust beans dealers in the village.
