When they tell you "the image speaks", what do you imagine? Is it really worth more than a thousand words? It is ironic to try to answer such a question through this text, but first it is necessary to introduce myself.
I am Luis Felipe Hernández, social communicator, aspiring filmmaker and photographer. I live in Venezuela, a country like any other in the world that is worthy of portraying through bitter and sweet stories.
Cuando te dicen “la imagen habla”, ¿qué te imaginas? ¿Realmente vale más que mil palabras? Es irónico tratar de responder semejante pregunta mediante este texto, pero primero es necesario presentarme.
Soy Luis Felipe Hernández, comunicador social, aspirante a cineasta y fotógrafo. Vivo en Venezuela, país como cualquiera del mundo que es digno de retratar mediante historias amargas y dulces.
Ever since I was a child, I have felt an inexplicable attraction to observing the surrounding details. From the busy walk of a passerby, to the tail of a lively dog. Anything unnoticed before the gaze accustomed to the routine.
This is a habit that still remains. And thanks to my studies, I deepened my curiosity and turned it into an eagerness to understand human complexity in the social and individual, as well as the phenomena that surround it.
Desde pequeño he sentido una atracción inexplicable hacia la observación de detalles a mi alrededor. Desde el ajetreado caminar de un transeúnte, hasta la cola de un perro animado. Cualquier cosa desapercibida ante la mirada acostumbrada a la rutina.
Este es un hábito que todavía permanece. Y gracias a mis estudios, profundicé la curiosidad y la convertí en la avidez de entender la complejidad humana en lo social e individual, así como los fenómenos que la envuelven.
Culture helps us find the way to find answers, which in turn are mirrors to look at ourselves and understand ourselves. That is why throughout history we have known icons who have contributed from art, science and any work of ingenuity. No matter who or how it is, we can all help this network of exchange called society.
That is why I have the purpose of telling stories in images that connect, awaken sensations, with a critical vision that seeks to make visible the apparently unquestionable.
La cultura nos ayuda a hallar la forma de encontrar respuestas, que a su vez son espejos para mirarnos y comprendernos. Es por eso que a lo largo de la historia hemos conocido íconos que han contribuido desde el arte, la ciencia y cualquier obra del ingenio. No importa quién sea o cómo sea, todos podemos ayudar a esta red de intercambio llamada sociedad.
Es por eso que tengo el propósito de contar historias en imágenes que conecten, despierten sensaciones, con una visión crítica que busca hacer visible lo aparentemente incuestionable.
My friends often tell me that I am a sensitive person, and I don't deny it. Maybe that's why I gravitate towards the arts, especially music, literature and film. However, my rational side has pushed me towards the social sciences. In this way, I try to find a balance.
Now that you know a little about me, I end with the initial question of my presentation: is the image really worth more than a thousand words? Before the image speaks, you must first know the word, because after all, what is communication without words? So are images.
Mis amigos suelen decirme que soy una persona sensible, y no lo niego. Tal vez por eso me decanto hacia las artes, especialmente la música, la literatura y el cine. Sin embargo, mi lado racional me ha impulsado hacia las ciencias sociales. De este modo pretendo encontrar un equilibrio.
Ahora que ya sabes un poco de mí, termino con la pregunta inicial de mi presentación: ¿realmente la imagen vale más que mil palabras? Es que antes de la imagen hable, primero hay que conocer la palabra, porque al fin y al cabo, ¿qué es la comunicación sin las palabras? Las imágenes también lo son.
