White Lady or PAEONY ROCKII. I came across this beautiful flower during a visit to the Botanical Garden in Cologne earlier this year. It immediately stood out from the other flowers, mainly because of its impressive size, which unfortunately is not fully visible in the photographs. Individual blooms of this species can reach up to 25 centimeters in diameter.
I must admit that PAEONY ROCKII is a perfect combination of delicacy and strength. On one hand, its silky petals look incredibly soft and fragile. On the other hand, the plant itself belongs to the most resilient and long-lived tree peonies. Under favorable conditions, it can thrive and bloom in the same place for decades.
PAEONY ROCKII originates from the mountainous regions of central China. In the wild, it grows on rocky slopes at elevations exceeding 2,000 meters above sea level. It is therefore no surprise that it is considered one of the most valuable and highly regarded tree peonies in the world.
Another feature that caught my attention was its exceptionally beautiful and intense fragrance. I liked it so much that I stayed there for quite a while, moving from one bloom to another and enjoying their scent.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of this species is the dark purple blotches at the base of its petals, which can also be seen in the photographs below. Thanks to these markings, PAEONY ROCKII is difficult to confuse with any other peony species.
