Checking in from Germany!

Today I’ve prepared another church from the Low Beskids. This time, it’s the ORTHODOX CHURCH OF ST. DEMETRIUS IN BODAKI. Unfortunately, this is the last church I have to show you from my short trip to this region.

But who knows — maybe one day I’ll come back here and discover even more places. As I mentioned in my previous posts, there are many churches in the Low Beskids, and they are definitely worth visiting.

Na dzisiaj przygotowałam kolejną cerkiew z Beskidu Niskiego. Tym razem będzie to CERKIEW PRAWOSŁAWNA ŚW. DYMIRA W BODAKACH. Jest to już niestety ostatnia świątynia, którą mam Wam do zaprezentowania z mojej kilkudniowej wycieczki w ten region.

Ale kto wie — być może za jakiś czas uda mi się tutaj wrócić i odkryć kolejne miejsca. Jak już wspominałam w poprzednich postach, cerkwi w Beskidzie Niskim jest naprawdę wiele i zdecydowanie są warte zobaczenia.

Bodaki is a small, quiet village located far from the main routes, representing the typical landscape of the Low Beskids. It was there that we saw the church I mentioned earlier. The building was constructed in the 18th century, more precisely in 1784, which makes it one of the oldest churches in the entire region. Interestingly, it has survived for hundreds of years in almost unchanged form. The patron of the church is St. Demetrius. He was a soldier and a martyr, and a very important figure in Eastern tradition, as well as a symbol of faith and courage.

Bodaki to mała, spokojna wieś, z dala od głównych tras i pokazująca typowy krajobraz Beskidu Niskiego. To właśnie tam zobaczyłyśmy wspomnianą ową cerkiew. Świątynia ta została zbudowana w XVIII wieku, a dokładniej w 1784 roku, co czyni ją jedną z najstarszych cerkwi w całym regionie. Ciekawostką jest fakt, iż przetrwała setki lat w praktycznie niezmienionej formie. Patronem cerkwi jest święty Dymitr. Był on żołnierzem i męczennikiem oraz bardzo ważną postacią w tradycji wschodniej, również symbolem wiary i odwagi.

Like the other churches in this region, it is entirely a wooden structure, built using traditional carpentry techniques, often even without the use of nails. The church represents the Lemko style. This is reflected in its three towers, slender silhouette, and its tripartite structure, which is a typical layout for Lemko churches.

Tak jak pozostałe cerkwie w tym regionie, jest to w całości drewniana konstrukcja, wykonana tradycyjnymi technikami ciesielskimi, często nawet bez użycia gwoździ. Cerkiew ta reprezentuje oczywiście styl łemkowski. Wskazują na to trzy wieże, smukła sylwetka oraz trójdzielna bryła, czyli typowy układ dla cerkwi Łemków.

Today, the church still fulfills its original function. It is an Orthodox place of worship bringing together the local community, but not only them. It also attracts tourists and enthusiasts of wooden architecture. It forms an important part of the Low Beskids landscape, blending perfectly into it and reminding us of the culture and history of the Lemko people.
I’m glad that places like this still exist on the map of Poland, that they are still alive and not just museum exhibits.

Dzisiaj cerkiew ta nadal pełni swoją pierwotną funkcję. Jest świątynią prawosławną zrzeszającą lokalnych mieszkańców, ale nie tylko. Przyciąga turystów i miłośników drewnianej architektury. Świątynia ta jest częścią krajobrazu Beskidu Niskiego, świetnie się w niego komponuje i przypomina nam o kulturze i historii Łemków. Cieszę się, że takie miejsca wciąż widnieją na mapie Polski, wciąż żyją i nie są jedynie muzealnymi eksponatami.
