Hello everyone, I want to talk on the ways one can produce electricity.
Electricity current can be generated from;
Chemical Energy
Heat Energy
Mechanical Energy
Solar Energy
Explanation
Chemical Energy;
Electricity can be produced from chemical energy through the use of electric cell
A cell consist of 2 metals that are not similar, they are separated by an acid or salt solution (Electrolytes). The positive electrode is called an Anode while the negative electrode is called a Cathode. A simple cell consist of a copper rod as the cathode and zinc plate as the anode immersed in a container filled with dilute Tetra oxo sulphate(vi) acid [H2SO4]. When the copper rod and zinc plate are connected to a bulb using a conductor eg; metallic wire, the bulb lights up so that the current is flowing through it.
** The defect of simple cell **
A simple cell has two defect namely;
1.polarization
- Local action
These makes the cell to supply current for a short time.
Polarization;
This is due to the formation of hydrogen bubbles around the copper rod . It can be reduced with the application of a depolarizer such as manganese dioxide and potassium dichromate.
Local action;
This is due to impurity in the zinc plate. It can be prevented by rubbing of mecury over the surface of the zinc plate , this process is called amagalmation.
Heat energy;
Electricity can be generated from heat energy using a device called a thermocouples .
A thermocouple consist of two metallic wire such as copper and iron joined at one end and a free end connected to a galvanometer. When the junctions are put in hot water the galvanometer shakes which is an indication that current has flow.
Mechanical energy
Electricity can be produce from mechanical energy with adevice caled electric generator or dynamo
When the coils of isolated wire cuts across a magnetic line of force as the move across a magnetic field between two powerful magnet , current is endorse in the coil .
Solar energy ;
Electricity can be produce from solar energy with the device called photoelectric cell
A photoelectric cell consist of photosensitive surface as a cathode and a wire ring as an anode.
These are the ways you can transfer energy at ease.
