I was on a road trip to Solvang California which is a quaint town noted for its Danish architecture. But that is not what I want to talk about today. Driving down a 2-lane road just outside of Solvang, I passed a field with a flock of very big birds walking around. Yes, I did a double-take. It was Ostrichland USA.
I had to stop and check it out. I parked in the parking lot and entered what looked like a gift shop. It turned out to be a very cool gift shop with an interesting selection of items associated with ostriches and emus.
I paid the admission to go and see the animals and purchased a feeder tray. I walked out onto an elevated viewing deck and several ostriches were milling around. These birds were very big and tall. I held out the feeder to the closest bird and it came right up and started eating. I had to hold on really tightly, that bird was strong. It was an experience I will never forget.
Ostrichland USA had paths that I was able to walk and see ostriches and emus of different ages. It was very interesting and they also offer ostrich and emu eggs for sale. The attraction is open 7 days a week. Their website is www.ostrichlandusa.com
I am so glad I stop, it was fun getting to see these amazing birds up close and in a more open environment. If I ever get back to the Solvang area I will definitely stop again.
