This is an entry to a contest by @brittandjosie where you tell a short true story about your life in 2019 based on taking one word out of the prompt "who, what, where, when, why." Oh and How. Which is the word I will be choosing because I came to the sudden realization when thinking about what to write for this that it is the one year anniversary of our wonderful Chocolate Lab, Millie, joining our life. Please enjoy this letter to a dog.
How has it only been one year with you, Millie?
In 2018 I had been working at the same job for 10 years. I had a chinchilla for a pet, not a dog. We had a fish tank. We lived in Saskatoon. Now, look at us, Millie. You joined our life on Dec 28th, 2018. We got you from a farm a few hours from the city and we figured that would be the furthest you would go. In the spring we bought a small inflatable boat with a hard bottom and you came fishing with us. We took you to several lakes and you only jumped in every chance you got, good girl!
We went to Ottawa and walked down by the parliament building at only 6 months old and you were the bestest girl ever. You didn't bark at anyone and I didn't have to pick up poo in front of tourists.
It is now Dec 28th, 2019 and we are in Nunavut! You live above the arctic circle, dog. Another southern fool living the northern game. Some dogs learn to play fetch. But not you. You learn how to ride a snowmobile. The temperatures are cold as frig, but you got a cute little hoodie and little boots to keep you warm. Okay, they're not little boots. We had to get you XL. But now you're set! And I think you love the freedom up here more than us. Daily runs behind the snowmobile and rides when you get tired? What more could a girl ask for? Oh, I know. A stick! There are no trees up here for you. I'm sorry about that, Millie-moo. Hopefully, when we go south in June you can get your fill of all things woody. But that's just one of the things you have to look forward to in 2020. There's all the family and friends to go see, too. And lakes to swim in. And fish to scare away from mom and dad!
I wonder what else it is going to bring for us, girl.
Definitely more naps on the couch.
And maybe the odd pup we have to rescue from abuse. You're a good babysitter. Thank you for making our lives easier. Our hearts are too big for this northern life sometimes.
Please enter your own post into this contest. It will be a fun way to look back and reflect on your year. I know it gave me a smile to sit down and reflect on this past year with my dog. I didn't even realize this was the one year anniversary of picking up our dog. It's funny how those small milestones can pass you by. Don't worry she got spoiled rotten on her birthday and Christmas. I think she got more presents than we did! But that's what you do for the babies, right? Spoil them?
All images were taken by @lacking. The brown dog is a Chocolate Lab named Millie. The white pup in the last photo is named Snow and he is an Inuit Sled Dog. Snow is a rescue and will be flying south in the next few weeks to a No-Kill shelter in Ottawa.
