No conocía de la existencia de este Museo, realmente fue por pura casualidad que lo vi. Estaba caminando un día por Belgrano y nunca había prestado atención a ese lugar, siempre asumí que era una Iglesia. Me acerqué de curioso y aproveché la oportunidad de registrar mi paso por ahí para compartirlo con ustedes.
El Museo Histórico Belgrano, como lo dice el nombre, está principalmente dedicado a exposiciones acerca de la vida de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, que es un líder muy importante acá en Argentina. Él nació en San Juan y fue Presidente desde 1868 hasta 1874. En el lugar además se muestra mucho de lo que fuera su obra literaria.
Este Museo fue creado en septiembre de 1938, para conmemorar el 50 anivesario del fallecimiento de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, quien falleció en 1888. Anteriormente ese edificio fue la sede del Gobierno Nacional desde 1880 a 1883.
I didn't know about the existence of this museum, it was actually by pure chance that I saw it. I was walking through Belgrano one day and I had never paid attention to this place, I always assumed it was a church. I went there out of curiosity and took the opportunity to record my time there to share it with you.
The Belgrano Historical Museum, as the name suggests, is mainly dedicated to exhibitions about the life of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, who is a very important leader here in Argentina. He was born in San Juan and was President from 1868 to 1874. The place also displays much of his literary work.
This museum was created in September 1938, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, who died in 1888. Previously, this building was the headquarters of the National Government from 1880 to 1883.
Al llegar al Museo me dieron un panfleto que contiene un montón de información sobre el Museo. Se muestra la fecha exacta en la que fue inaugurado el Museo: 11 de septiembre de 1938 y además se destaca que si bien el Museo se centra en Domingo Fausto Sarmiento, también se le da importancia a Nicolás Avellaneda y políticas de fines del siglo XIX.
El Museo está conformado por pinturas, mobiliario, medallas, condecoraciones y objetos que pertenecieron a Sarmiento.
En cuanto a su labor en la gestión pública, se encuentran piezas como su banda y bastón presidencial, que fueron utilizados en su asunción.
Una de las cosas que más me sorprendió del lugar es que tienen un especial de cine cada tanto. Este mes tienen el ciclo de cine de "grandes musicales", que incluye obras como Sombrero de Copa, Sopa de Ganso, El Mago de Oz, Cabaret y Cantando Bajo La Lluvia.
When I arrived at the Museum, I was given a pamphlet containing a lot of information about the Museum. It shows the exact date on which the Museum was inaugurated: September 11, 1938, and also highlights that although the Museum focuses on Domingo Fausto Sarmiento, it also gives importance to Nicolás Avellaneda and policies from the late 19th century.
The Museum is made up of paintings, furniture, medals, decorations and objects that belonged to Sarmiento.
Regarding his work in public administration, there are pieces such as his sash and presidential baton, which were used at his inauguration.
One of the things that surprised me the most about the place is that they have a movie special every now and then. This month they have a "great musicals" movie series, which includes works like Top Hat, Duck Soup, The Wizard of Oz, Cabaret and Singin' in the Rain.
Siempre se aprende algo nuevo, y en este caso aprendí cuál era el significado de la palabra "museo", creo que nunca nadie me lo dijo ni me puse a pensar su significado, pero hay un letrero enorme que muestra "Museo, quiere decir domicilio de las musas", ya con eso jamás se me olvidará su significado.
Al entrar al Museo te encontrarás con una cartelera con datos relevantes de Sarmiento. Se nota que detrás de esa cartelera estuvo el esfuerzo de muchas personas porque si bien es sencilla, todos los detalles están muy bien cuidados.
You always learn something new, and in this case I learned what the word "museum" meant. I don't think anyone ever told me or thought about its meaning, but there is a huge sign that says "Museum, meaning home of the muses." With that, I will never forget its meaning.
When you enter the museum, you will find a sign with relevant information about Sarmiento. It is clear that many people put effort into that sign because even though it is simple, all the details are very well taken care of.
Se puede observar objetos de gran valor, como una libreta de notas donde hacía anotaciones sobre la Campaña del Ejército Grande, con fecha de 1852.
Resalta mucho una pintura de Sarmiento junto con su banda y bastón presidencial.

También se pueden observar billetes de 10 centavos con fecha de 1884 y 1992. Fue muy interesante ver eso, siempre he sentido fascinación por los billetes antiguos, ver como todo va cambiando.
Hay una sección dedicada al hallazgo de fragmentos de lápicas en el Museo Histórico Sarmiento y es algo muy interesante, comparto el texto para quienes no puedan leer la imagen o no entiendan español:
"A lo largo del tiempo el edificio del MHS ha sido objeto de remodelaciones y obras para la mejora de su estructura y funcionalidad. A raíz de ello, debido a la rotura de un caño de provisión de agua ubicado debajo del solado exterior del museo, en julio del año 2021 fue necesario levantar algunas baldosas para realizar las reparaciones pertinentes. Allí, por casualidad se detectó que en el reverso de las baldosas de mármol había inscripciones de nombres de personas, fechas y leyendas inconclusas, lo que daba el indicio que en verdad esas piezas eran fragmentos de lápidas que habían sido reutilizadas para este solado. Allí surgieron preguntas entre estas acerca de dónde provienen, por qué se las utilizó y principalmente cuándo fue que se colocaron en el edificio.
Muchas son hoy las dudas respecto de su origen e instalación en el hoy Museo Sarmiento. Aún se continúa investigando, recolectando información para buscar una posible respuesta, aunque tenemos una posible hipótesis…"
You can also see 10-cent bills dated 1884 and 1992. It was very interesting to see that, I have always been fascinated by old bills, seeing how everything changes.
There is a section dedicated to the discovery of fragments of tombstones in the Sarmiento Historical Museum and it is very interesting, I share the text for those who cannot read the image or do not understand Spanish:
"Over time, the MHS building has been the subject of remodeling and works to improve its structure and functionality. As a result, due to the breakage of a water supply pipe located under the museum's exterior flooring, in July 2021 it was necessary to lift some tiles to make the relevant repairs. There, by chance, it was detected that on the back of the marble tiles there were inscriptions of people's names, dates and unfinished legends, which gave the indication that these pieces were in fact fragments of tombstones that had been reused for this flooring. There were questions about where they came from, why they were used and, above all, when they were placed in the building.
There are many doubts today regarding their origin and installation in what is now the Sarmiento Museum. Research is still ongoing, collecting information to find a possible answer, although we have a possible hypothesis…"
Una de las tantas cosas que captaron mi atención fue la ley 2786 "sed bueno con los alimentos". Donde se declaran como actos punibles los malos tratos con los animales y con multas a quienes los lastimen.
Jamás habría pensado que se hablara del maltrato animal hace casi 200 años.
La imponente pintura que ven más abajo donde aparece sentado Sarmiento, es una pintura de Eugenia Belin Sarmiento, su nieta.
Y en cuanto al sillón, es el sillón que se asocia a sus últimos momentos de vida, el cual estaba especialmente articulado para que Sarmiento pase sus últimos años. Fue un obsequio de Ambrosio Olmos.
One of the many things that caught my attention was Law 2786 "Be good with food." Where animal abuse is declared as punishable acts and fines for those who hurt them.
I would never have thought that animal abuse was talked about almost 200 years ago.
The imposing painting that you see below where Sarmiento is sitting is a painting by Eugenia Belin Sarmiento, his granddaughter.
And as for the chair, it is the chair that is associated with his last moments of life, which was specially articulated so that Sarmiento could spend his last years. It was a gift from Ambrosio Olmos.
Por último, quiero compartirle dos cosas muy interesantes que vi en el Museo. Primero, el hermoso piano que se puede apreciar en las fotografías de abajo. Según lo que pude investigar, Sarmiento tocaba el piano, pero no era profesional, era más como un pasatiempo, ya que estaba muy interesado en las artes.
Además de eso, se muestra parte del discurso de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento tras el fallecimiento de Charles Darwin. Ahí expresaba su profundo respeto por Darwin y reconoció su impacto en su área.
El Museo es bastante modesto, pero está muy bien conservado y el trato de quienes ahí trabajan es realmente maravilloso. Tienes que visitarlo.
Finally, I want to share with you two very interesting things that I saw at the Museum. First, the beautiful piano that can be seen in the photos below. According to what I was able to find out, Sarmiento played the piano, but he was not a professional, it was more like a hobby, since he was very interested in the arts.
In addition to that, part of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's speech after Charles Darwin's death is shown. There he expressed his deep respect for Darwin and recognized his impact on his field.
The Museum is quite modest, but it is very well preserved and the treatment of those who work there is really wonderful. You have to visit it.
