As we age

Did you ever notice the continuing shortening of time as we age?

Well the older we get, the more familiar we become with our surroundings and events. So we no longer pay much attention to the details of our environments or routines. But children experience the world as new and unfamiliar place filled with new experiences. This means that children must use significantly more brain power re-configuring their mental ideas of the outside world. The theory suggests that this appears to make time run more slowly for children than for adults stuck in a routine.

The most current theory is the more familiar we become with the day-to-day experiences of life, the faster time seems to run, and generally, this familiarity increases with age.

The reasoning is that the biochemical mechanism that releases the neurotransmitter dopamine on new stimuli (that helps us to learn to measure time), drops past the age of 20. This continues to drop into older age, to make time seem faster.
