The platform and shooting video games have always been very fun and popular, likewise when hearing or reading the letters CT and shooting video game in the same sentence is almost inevitable for everyone not to think of Counter Strike, despite being the video game that popularized this term is not the only one to use anti-terrorist agents as characters in their video game. CT Special Forces is a somewhat old video game whose main character is a special agent of the anti-terrorist forces who must eliminate all enemies on his way while using a variety of weapons and using the most typical uniforms of these agents. This title dates back to the beginning of the 21st century in 2002 and was available on the PlayStation and Nintendo's portable console of the time, the GameBoy Advance.

CT Special Forces is a 2D side-scrolling game in which we can advance through different levels of height throughout each level, the first graphical aspect that is quite striking in this title is the way in which the start of the mission is presented, as well as the story, the protagonist will appear talking on a kind of radio with his superior who seems to be a general while we see images of both and lines of text below the images, a design that undoubtedly ends up reminding the iconic Metal Gear saga which is most likely a tribute to this great saga of video games.

image.png

Despite having fairly limited and simple graphics, the visual aspect has a slightly cartoonish approach with a palette of bright and clear colors, the result is very good and generates a good feeling when playing this title, even the objects that we can collect for the levels have basic and minimalist designs but are very easy to understand and combine well with the entire design of the game.

Being a video game for the GameBoy Advance the controls are few and simple, in addition to the basic movement our character has a button to jump and another to shoot, although it is possible to shoot when you jump you can only make a shot and try to shoot at the height you want can be quite complicated so it is not a good idea to try to make jumps with attacks, With one of the triggers we can switch between the variety of weapons available to our character although only the basic weapon has unlimited ammunition and the others use ammunition that we find through the levels, in case of having a weapon with zero ammunition when shooting our character will automatically switch to his basic weapon to continue shooting. The basic weapon is a rifle with a fairly low rate of fire plus we can not leave the fire button pressed to attack automatically, with this weapon must be pressing the fire button over and over again which can be somewhat uncomfortable, the character can shoot upwards with a certain angle of inclination, but you can not shoot vertically as in other titles.

Unlike other titles our character will have a health bar so he will not die at the first hit he receives, but in the same way the enemies have a certain amount of health and will resist several hits depending on the weapon we are using, some additional weapons like the automatic rifle have a higher damage and a higher rate of fire with which you can eliminate the enemies quite easily but in the same way the ammunition consumption is quite fast and can be exhausted quite easily if you are not careful, We also have explosive weapons such as grenades that can eliminate enemies with a single impact but these are used automatically with a trigger and the launch angle is predetermined so you can not choose where the grenades will fall and you have to get used to the arc they form when throwing them and be careful that there is no surface on the character otherwise the grenade will explode on the wall or floor as soon as you throw it and does not reach the target.

Although the character's health can be reduced quite easily both by enemy shots and by explosions that reduce more than half of the life, it can be regenerated with health boxes that we found by the level and these boxes completely regenerate the character's health, you can also find boxes of supplies such as ammunition of different types either in areas of the level or by destroying enemy bunkers. In this title the character can also crouch both to shoot from a lower height and to try to avoid enemy projectiles, but the latter will not always be a foolproof strategy because, if you stay long crouched enemies will shoot with a slightly lower height, but making the shots hit you and you will receive much damage when you thought you were completely safe.

The entertaining thing about CT Special Forces is that despite being a title for the GameBoy Advance also has several different mechanics and levels that bring a great variety to the adventure avoiding falling into the monotony of repetitive levels simply with different backgrounds and designs, each level has several sublevels and at the end of the last one before moving to a new level we have a boss battle that can become complicated while you get used to the attack patterns, We also have curious and unusual mechanics in the levels such as climbing mountains, parachute jumping, using a sniper rifle where the view of the game changes and much more, there are even levels where it stops being a side scrolling to be a kind of shoot 'em up. All this increases the entertainment in CT Special Forces, also an aspect that somehow reduces the difficulty of the title is the fact that when you lose a life you reappear in the place where you died instead of having to start the level from the beginning.
