What is the picture of this war? The destroyed Freedom Square in Kharkiv? Or the woman who gave birth to a baby in the basement? Homeless people making Molotov cocktails? People sticking strips of paper to windows? A rocket that hits Babi Yar? Refugees on the border, destroyed houses, half-empty cities?
I consider this picture an icon, an amulet against destruction, part of the Ukrainian resistance. I see my city in documentary black and white, and in red, and I can't focus on what's going on. I hold this picture in front of me as a shield protecting fleeting life in the Eternal city of Kiev.
