Hello everyone and welcome back to Kralizec Gaming.Today we are going to take a look at Doom Eternal. This demon-infested first-person shooter promises the action Doom from 2016 gave us with better graphics and even more demons to kill. Just this time on Earth. Whether it can deliver on this promise is the question we will try to answer today. Doom Eternal is available on Steam for 59 Euro and 99 cents or your regional equivalent.

Doom is back! And it is Eternal! After the surprisingly great comeback it made in 2016 the Doom Slayer decided to return to the stage and he is ready to tear hoards of demons into bloody scraps with his bare hands. This time on Earth as Hell is invading it. And it is your job to pick up your shotguns and prove to the demons that the Slayer should be feared.

A Charming Massacre

Doom Eternal is your favorite heavy metal album that came alive. You know the one, the one that has Death covered with chains standing inside of an Egyptian temple that has blood pouring from its roof while goat-headed demons are flying around. It is just the perfect blend of ridiculous presentation that it is so freaking cool yet completely absurd. And somehow, there is that bit of much-needed self-awareness when the creators understand how much bullshit that put into a single cup to make everyone enjoy it.

The combination of rough guitar riffs, guns blazing and the inhumane screams of demonic hoards is there to put you into a trance. A killing trance. If you would describe the 2016 Doom as a bloody ballet then Doom Eternal is more of a mosh-pit under the stage of a heavy metal concert. While it may not be elegant it overpowers anyone who doesn't like with its pure power and fury.

If you played the 2016 Doom, you will immediately feel at home. The core mechanics remain largely the same. Instead of trying to figure out tiny elegant mechanics the devs just decided to turn everything up to 11. Sounds like a great recipe for success but sometimes it does have its issues as it takes the game almost into chaos during which you must slam a surprisingly high amount of buttons. Just look at it – nine different weapons which each has two different modes of fire, the key to change the secondary mode of fire for each weapon, melee finishers, chainsaw, flamethrower, the super-powerful sword, two types of grenades…. This might easily make it seem that any kind of tactic must be thrown out of the window and the goal is just to smash. But… somehow… no… that is not the case. The chaos needs to be conquered as every attack type as its purpose. Some give you health, some armor, some ammo, others give you time to consolidate or attack specific weak points of your enemies.

Cursed Platforming

I have no problem giving you guys the conclusion right here. Doom Eternal is (for me) THE best first-person shooter of this gaming generation. And with its younger brother, they create a duo of awesome first-person shooters every gamer should play as they will no doubt come classics. I love how straightforward both of them are. Both of them celebrate old-school first-person shooters without ever having to resort mocking them. The game loves to show how over the top everything is. Just look at the screen – giant weapons cover almost half the screen. Hundreds of meters tall demons destroying humanity in the background. Finishing moves that could make even the biggest of lovers of gore blush. Everything is just pure metal.

And somehow, the devs made it all work. In all senses of the word. From it looking amazing, playing amazing and even working on a technical level. The game never chugs and shows all the AAA studios that it can be done. Games can be optimized on release while looking cool. Shame every dev studio that doesn't do it as ID Software shows it can be done even with the biggest of releases.

Yet, sadly, I cannot say the game is perfect. Mostly – for me – it was the number of platforming sections that completely take you out of the action and sometimes are just pure bullshit requiring you to jump blindly behind a corner without knowing whether you will have something to grab on there.

On the other hand, I really love the fact the Doom actually decided to go for a story this time. And a story that makes sense. And even more, not just a story. This time it is actual world-building. There is mythology, there are characters. But I do realize that the majority of people will not give a damn. But I loved it and it only makes me want more Doom games in the future.

Conclusion

So… in conclusion. The murder rage simulator is back. And not only is it back it is even more furious than ever before. It looks fantastic and the shooting is probably the best you will experience. It is a must-buy for anyone who loves shooters games and even a bigger must-buy for anyone who loves old-school shooter games. Truly, the only part that takes away from it is the amount of platforming. Just survive through that and be the Slayer. What are you waiting for? The demons must be slain.

So, that’s it for today guys. I hope you liked the review and if you did, please up-vote the review, follow my blog and be sure to share it with your friends. And comment, if you have anything you would like to add. See you guys later with more gaming content.
