Czech and English texts will differ quite a bit. I feel the need to explain Czech cultural references to potential foreign readers—things that don’t need to be explained to Czechs.
Besides, I don’t think there will be many foreign readers. Nor will there be many Czech ones, for that matter. On Hive, there are generally a lot of content creators but few readers. And I’m not one of the popular or well-known authors here.
A já tu nepatřím k oblíbeným a známým autorům.
In the Czech Republic, we dispose of waste in these types of containers. Black ones are for unsorted household waste, yellow ones for plastic, blue ones for paper, green ones for glass, and gray ones for metal. There are also containers for oil and textiles, but they aren’t found on every corner. Once a month, there is a pickup for larger unwanted items—such as pieces of furniture, construction debris, etc.
I went to take out the sorted trash, too. And something in the dumpster caught my eye. You can see for yourselves. After all, you can see for yourselves.
Také já jsem šel vynést setříděný odpad. A v kontejneru mě cosi zaujalo. Můžete vidět sami.
I played at being a dumpster diver. I took the contents out of the dumpster and photographed them. Taking items from a dumpster is illegal here. Once you dispose of your trash, it becomes the property of your municipality. So I assure you that after taking the photos, I put the papers back in the dumpster.
But now, let's talk about the paintings themselves. Of course, I wondered who painted them, who owned them, how they ended up there, and why they ended up in a dumpster.
It occurred to me that someone had applied to an art school and included a portfolio of their paintings with the application. They weren't accepted. So they threw their paintings away. Maybe.
And who are the people in those paintings? Were they painted from life or from a photograph? Are they people the artist knows, or people from magazines? I don't know.
Some of the paintings are signed “AS” or “Anděla. (Angela)” Should I play detective and check the doorbell lists to see if I can find someone with that name? “Anděla” is a woman’s name. If that person got married, she probably has a different last name.
Část obrazů je signovaná. AS nebo Anděla. Mám si zahrát na detektiva a obejít zvonková tabla, jestli tam někoho takového nenajdu? Anděla je ženské jméno. Jestli se ta osoba vdala, nese asi jiné příjmení.
I'm not a painter, and I don't know much about painting. But I can see that these paintings are inspired by various artistic movements. Maybe I could use Google to find out if they're actually just copies of famous originals that I, an art barbarian, don't recognize. But then I'd be robbing myself of a certain sense of mystery.
Nejsem malíř a nevím toho moc o malířství.
Perhaps I am the only viewer of these paintings. The trash container may have become an art gallery for a moment. (After all, for the homeless, it sometimes serves as a dining hall or a clothing storage area.)
If anyone is reading this post, can you think of any possible reasons why those paintings ended up in the dumpster? I’ve come up with about five. Do you think the same thing I do? Thanks for reading this far.
