Universidad de La Habana, como subir al Olimpo/University of Havana: How to Reach Olympus (Esp-Eng)
Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you. Here I am again to show you more of Cuba's capital.
Very close to the Napoleonic Museum is the University of Havana, or vice versa. Long before I moved to the capital, the figure of the Alma Mater was an icon and a reference point that greatly attracted my attention. I always wanted to climb those stairs, even if not to study, and I knew I would do it at some point.
I love history;since high school, my curiosity to learn about places, historical events, and cultural aspects of the past began, not only of Cuba but of the world. So, whenever I have the opportunity, I take a little jump to some of those places steeped in history.
The University of Havana is the oldest higher education institution in Cuba. It is a national symbol due to its history and its role in the country's political and cultural life. Founded in 1728, its first name was the Royal and Pontifical University of Saint Jerome of Havana. Its main campus, declared a National Monument, is located on the University Hill in Vedado, right on San Lázaro Street.
The disciplines studied at this university are related to Economic and Accounting Sciences; Natural Sciences and Mathematics; and Social Sciences and Humanities. Its grand staircase has 88 steps. To climb it, it is advisable to have enjoyed a good breakfast, because it can easily cause fatigue and leave you breathless. This staircase is also a site where cultural events and celebrations are held.
A medio camino, me detengo y me vuelvo hacia atrás.
Each step of the staircase is a slab of history, marked by the coming and going of generations of dreamy young people. Halfway up, I stop and turn around. From there, Havana looks tiny with its red roofs and the sea in the background.
Seeing up close and finally being able to touch the base of the Alma Mater statue (a Latin phrase meaning "nourishing mother") was a dream come true. This bronze statue welcomes the students and visitors who go up and down the staircase daily. Alma Mater holds the university shield in one hand and a key in the other, symbolizing the door of knowledge that the university opens. Interestingly, while I was taking some photos of her, a dove perched on her head.
A detail that caught my eye was the figure of the owl at the top of the rector's building at the main entrance. It is not a real sculpture, but a functional architectural element; it is the finial of a lightning rod. Due to its elevated position and small size relative to the enormous neoclassical building, it can sometimes go unnoticed at first glance, but all Havanans know it's there.
In Western culture, the owl is a traditional symbol of wisdom and knowledge. Due to its ability to see in the dark, it represents the light of knowledge that dispels ignorance. A young student who saw me taking photos of the owl asked me if I knew the legend, and I said no. Laughing, she told me:
"The owl will descend from its pedestal and fly the day a virgin(in the sense of a maiden or chaste woman) graduates from the University of Havana."
Of course,I also laughed after hearing that jocular prophecy. That same young woman told me that many students (her included) consider it an amulet or talisman; before an important exam, they stare at the owl from below and make the sign of the cross, asking for wisdom and good fortune.
The University has an interior courtyard where there is a royal palm and other elements of Cuban history. Stepping onto the Patio de los Laureles was like floating in the air. There is a solitary and immense peace there. I sat for a moment on a bench, under the shade of these magnificent century-old trees, to regain my strength.
I walked through its streets and spaces with the certainty of being in a city within another city because it is an immense site. I delighted in observing the details. The giant columns, the perfect curve of the railings, the large polished doors, the moss on the walls, and the shadows cast by the neocolonial arches.
Within the University, there are two important museums, the Felipe Poey Museum of Natural History and the Montané Anthropological Museum, which I could not visit because they were closed at the time of my visit. Another pending task I noted in my agenda. And that concludes my tour; I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
