Anesthesia
I created this digital mixed-media artwork titled "Anesthesia." It is based on an old memory of mine. My experience with surgery was when I was around five years old. That first surgery had a profound impact on me, and the memory remains sharp and vivid. I had a total of three surgeries, but the first one left the strongest impression.
The main theme of this artwork is a merry-go-round, which I generated using AI. I also drew some parts by hand. For the background, I used several images and created a collage, which closely resembles what I saw in my mind. I then added various digital images and applied further digital processing to complete the piece.
Before the surgery, I had to endure a very painful anesthesia shot. In fact, I remember receiving an initial painful injection and then a second type of anesthesia in the operating room, just before the surgery began. Of course, I didn’t wake up during the procedure.
However, just as the surgery was ending, I became aware of my consciousness. I heard my surgeon and his assistants talking. I also heard background music. My surgeon sounded very relaxed, and hearing their conversation gave me a sense of relief. Right before I regained consciousness, I had an incredibly vivid vision, which inspired this artwork.
The colours in the vision were pinkish, psychedelic, and slightly spooky. I saw a merry-go-round with my friends and some of my hospital roommates sitting on it, waving at me. I also saw my family. One memorable part of the vision was a Snoopy stuffed animal, which had been gifted to me by one of my roommates. She was very gentle and had gone through a difficult surgery. I called her the “Snoopy Lady” because she had so many Snoopy toys. The day before my surgery, she gave me one of them as a lucky charm, and I was so happy to receive it. In the vision, Snoopy appeared, and seeing it made me happy.
Surrounding the merry-go-round were strange, surreal images. I included a melted Rubik's cube, a candy ring (called a "Jewel Ring"), lots of medicines, butterflies, fireworks, and more. I also added needle shots and the hands of my doctor, which appeared in the vision. Everything was spinning again and again. It was both comforting and strange. Some parts felt good and happy, while others were filled with anxiety and fear.
Eventually, I woke up in the recovery room. I’ve never forgotten that surgical vision, even though I had other surgeries later in life. I’m grateful that I came back from that vivid, dreamlike world to this one.

麻酔
「麻酔」というタイトルのデジタル・ミクストメディア・アートを作りました。昔の記憶をベースに作ったものです。これは５歳の頃の手術時の記憶です。この時受けた初回の手術はとてもインパクトのあるもので、記憶が鮮明に残っています。全部で３回の手術でしたが、やはり、初回が１番忘れられないです。
このアートにとって主役となるメリーゴーランドの画像をAIで作り出しました。ところどころ、手書きで描かなければならない部分がありました。背景は、いくつかの画像を駆使してコラージュを作ったがところ、その時のビジョンにかなり近いものが出来上がりました。そして、デジタル画像をいくつか加え、全体的にデジタル加工を施しました。
手術前、ものすごい痛い麻酔を受けなければなりませんでした。事実、手術室で直前に通常の麻酔を受けた記憶があるのですが、このいちばん最初に受ける麻酔がとてつもなく痛かったです。もちろん、手術中の記憶はまったくありません。
ところが、手術の終わり頃、少しずつ意識が戻ってきたのを感じました。執刀医の先生が、アシスタントの看護師さんと会話しているのが聞こえてきました。バックグラウンドミュージックもかかっているのが聞こえました。先生はとてもリラックスした雰囲気でしたので、私はその会話を聞いて安心したのを覚えています。意識が完全に戻る前、私はビジョンをみました。それが、今回のアートにつながっています。
その時のビジョンはピンクがかっていて、サイケデリックで、少しだけおどろおどろしい感じがしました。友だちや同じ病室の人たちがメリーゴーランドに乗って、こちらに手を振っています。自分の家族もいました。中でもいちばん印象に残ったのは、スヌーピーのぬいぐるみでした。同室のお姉さんが手術前日にお守りとしてくれたものです。彼女はたくさんのスヌーピーグッズを持っていたので、「スヌーピーお姉さん」と呼んでいました。スヌーピーお姉さんはとても優しく、難しい手術を控えていました。彼女からもらったスヌーピーがビジョンの中に出てきたので、嬉しく思ったことを覚えています。
メリーゴーランドの周りには、奇妙でシュールなものたちがありました。とけたルービックキューブや「ジュエルリング」というリングの形をしたあめ、たくさんの薬、蝶々、花火などです。自分が受けた麻酔の画像も入れ、手術医の先生の手に見立てた画像も入れ込みました。これらすべてが何度もぐるぐると回っていました。嬉しい気持ちや楽しい気持ちがある反面、不安で恐怖を覚えるようなビジョンでした。
その後、術後回復室で目が覚めました。それからも手術を何度か受けましたが、あの時にみたビジョンを決して忘れることは出来ないと思います。鮮やかなあのビジョンの中から目覚めて、この現実の世界に戻ってこられてよかったと思います。
