New Nova Block 2: The Crew Revelation
Block 2 is really a three-stage rocket.
Stage 1 comes home. Stage 2 comes home. The 5 m fairing - if that is the bit that does not - is the third stage you throw away.
Once you see it that way, a logical next move almost seems clear. Repurpose Pathfinder as that third stage. Not as a throwaway fairing. As crew.
Pathfinder’s upper stage is already designed for reuse. Tapered. Capsule-like. Base-first reentry. Actively cooled heat shield. Hydrolox with restarts. Lands under its own power. Designed to come home.
So instead of an expendable shell on top of Block 2’s cylindrical second stage, you put a Pathfinder-derived return ship there. Adapter between them. Different diameters, so it is not a drop-in. The third stage becomes a vehicle that carries people - or cargo - and flies home.
Stoke have not said they will do this. It just seems a logical step if the aim is a fully reusable rocket.
It is not "just add seats." Human-rating is still a whole program. Abort modes are the missing piece Pathfinder was never asked to carry.
Mass still matters. If that ship goes up on Block 2, it does not need full ascent prop. Only return prop. Deorbit, landing, cooling residuals. Removing the ascent prop gives roughly 1-3 tonnes mass range it needs to work.
Pathfinder is built to prove the reentry physics. Block 2 scales the stack and creates a third-stage slot. Putting a Pathfinder-class crew stage there is the logical outcome of calling Block 2 what it is - a three-stage rocket.
Has anyone heard anything? Is Stoke already planning this quietly… or am I just being too hopeful? ��
