I am calling it: First human landing on Mars: 21 November 2033.
A Sunday night in America, a Monday afternoon in New Zealand, a ship on the dirt at Arcadia Planitia.

On the ground that is Sunday 20 November, 8:00 pm Eastern, 5:00 pm Pacific, and Monday 21 November, 2:00 pm in New Zealand.
Live television in both places. Not because television is the mission. Because if this actually happens, the world will watch, and there is no prize for landing at 3:00 am in the two countries most likely to stay up for it.
Why that date fits
My Mars Independence series already had the logic. Uncrewed proof first. Then androids. Then people.
The Timing chapters made it clear: the 2030-31 window is Window 1, and Window 1 is 27 000 Optimus androids before any human. That is by design. It is the whole risk model.
Early Mars is radiation, dust, untested landings, and life support that has never run for months on the surface. Androids do not need air. They wake up and start work. Humans should arrive to pads, power, and propellant that already exist.
So the first crew does not ride the android wave. They ride the next one.
That next transfer leaves Earth in early 2033 and can put a Starship on Mars toward the end of that arrival cluster. A fast V4 Starship flight still fits. The 2033 opportunity is one of the kinder ones this decade. You do not need a miracle trajectory. You leave late in the departure window, fly something like 180 to 200 days, and you are there in November.
Could people go one window earlier?
Yes. An expeditionary crew in the 2031 arrival season is physically possible. I even ran the same maths for it.

I am still not calling that for the first landing. I’d love to, and maybe closer to the time I will, but for now I’m staying with the next window.
2031 stays the surge window. The androids still go. A small crew would only be extras on that fleet, not a replacement for it. A few cabins of air, food, and medicine on top of 27 000 machines is a payload nick, not a rewrite of the cargo plan.
The problem is timing, not tonnage. Those extras would touch down in the same weeks the androids wake up. No year of site work. No proven power loop. No local propellant. You are camping beside the construction crew on a surface that has had, at best, one or two messy uncrewed tries. That is a short trip with a long funeral risk. The plan is independence, not a photo from an unfinished pad.
Where Elon and NASA sit
Elon’s own recent numbers sit on top of the same two years.
In July 2026 he said people on Mars in roughly 5 to 7 years, with a lander a few years sooner. Counted from mid-2026 that is humans in 2031 to 2033. The 2031 date is his hopeful edge. The 2033 date is the edge that still works if the first uncrewed shots are late or ugly.
NASA does not contradict 2033. NASA also does not support it. There is no NASA year for a human Mars landing. The agency is landing people on the Moon first, with Artemis IV targeted around 2028. The current administrator has talked about a nuclear path putting four people on Mars in 10 to 15 years. That is 2036 to 2041 if you take him at his word. So 2033 is not a NASA date. It is a SpaceX date that still has robots doing the stupidly dangerous years first.
Why not later than 2033?
Because once the 2031 android wave is down, waiting another full synodic period is how projects die of caution. The 2033 window is the first one where the surface can be prepared and the ships can still be the same generation we are building toward now. V4 class, full refuel, heat shield that only has to survive one Mars entry if the early hulls stay on the surface. You just need ships that can land safely.
The landing site is the same one SpaceX has been staring at for years. Arcadia Planitia, northern mid-latitudes, roughly 40 north and 202 east. Flat enough for a big steel ship. Ice close enough to feed ISRU. Far enough from the pole that winter does not kill the solar. If the exact pad slides a few kilometres, the date does not move.
What would make me pull the pin?
- A failed or skipped 2028 cargo window
- No working orbital refuel
- A heat shield that cannot take a Mars pulse even once
- Optimus production that never leaves the factory floor
Any one of those and 2033 becomes 2035. Reality will judge it.

- Androids in 2031.

That is the sequence that actually gets a colony, not just a flag.
