1,000,000 vs 1,000 - which is best?
Elon Musk has said for years that a self-sustaining Mars city needs about a million people and on the order of a million tonnes of cargo. If the ships from Earth stop, does Mars keep growing?
A million is a city. Depth. Spares. Schools that are not a spare room. Markets, arguments, and lots of company. It is also slow. That census is a multi-decade mission, closer to mid-century than to 2039.
A thousand is not a city. It is the lean independence plan.
Genetics does not demand a million. Social life wants more than a few hundred. A thousand sits above the "keep me happy" band and still small enough that you know too many names.
The labour is the twist. One Optimus android does the work of roughly 5-7 people in heavy industry. Land tens of thousands first - about 27,000 in the first surge window - and a thousand humans arrive to power, propellant, habitats and roads instead of digging them by hand.
Cut the population and you cut the Earth bill hard. Fewer people means far less food, air, shelter and medical mass, and far fewer Starship flights to haul it. That is how a robot-first plan drops the old million-tonne city picture to something like ~75,000 tonnes, and slashes the launch count with it. The eight gates still need plants, foundries, power and spares, yet it is still a significant drop - much more achievable, much sooner.
So the story is not million versus thousand as rivals. It is sequence. Close the gates with machines and a small screened crew. Declare when Mars can eat, weld, fuel and repair without Earth. Grow into the city later, on Martian time.
A million people is a civilisation. You just do not need to get there to be self-sustaining and independent.
A thousand can pass the stop-the-ships test if the androids already built the industrial core.
Mass is still needed, just less. Fewer people means less stuff to ship, and self-sufficiency gets reachable with much less resource usage.
Get sovereign first. Grow second.
If the plants and androids were already on the ground, the choice is whether 1,000 humans is enough to call it independence - or whether you wait for the million-person colony first.
I think I could live with only a thousand people there.
