The educational system has remained the same for a very long time despite all the complaints people have been expressing. Many have been clamouring for a change in the curriculum, especially considering how much the world has evolved, where most of what is taught in the system feels like a waste of time and useless in real life.
Come to think of it, I don't blame the system that much. Most of the things students are forced to study are usually beneficial to them, making them more broad-minded. It's just that the system has taken the goal of being broad too far by imposing so many things that are not relevant. Some examples of these are:
Forcing people to learn different languages, which in the end becomes irrelevant to those who are not interested. I was forced and beaten endlessly with a cane while learning the French language. At the end, did I use it? No! In fact, the syllabus was just forceful, because even the teachers who taught us never made us love the subject—they simply wanted to pour everything into our brains and run away.
I understand that the curriculum intended to make us broad in different languages, but that is not the right approach. It should be designed for those who are genuinely interested and not forced on anyone. I hate that act!
The same thing applies to all the unrelated subjects tied to the particular discipline a student has chosen.
Real-life practicals in school
To me, most of the theories taught in school are somewhat irrelevant. The educational system is aware of this, yet they insist on keeping it that way.
In my opinion, the school system should stop beating around the bush and focus on practicals as they relate to real-life applications. Calculations and experimentation methods should be emphasized, and theoretical teachings should revolve around them, instead of immersing students in endless mathematical problems without significant use.
I passed through the polytechnic wing of the higher institution, where practicals are supposed to be a major focus. But I tell you what—we still did a lot of theoretical work that neither added to the practicals nor proved applicable to real-life problems.
