Maturity really has its own thing. How it plays and captures the brain to another level is out of this world. Who would have thought that I would come of age where I would prefer to wear native wear for Christmas events instead of the regular and trendy jeans and polo? In fact, as it appears now, I see native wear as the best form of clothing because it makes someone appear big and rich. Oh yeah, not only for guys but for ladies too. If you don’t know this, it means you’re below 11 years.
Way back, my parents had many of us, and anytime Christmas was approaching, my mom would buy large yards of cloth for us to sew uniform native wear as our Christmas dress. That was the easiest way for my parents to reduce the expenses of buying “already made” clothes for each of us. Whenever it was that time of the year and we noticed it was “native” again, hell would let loose. Why always native??? We would start feeling the pain of appearing poor on Christmas Day with our burial-like native wear even before Christmas day. We would start reacting negatively to everything at home with frowns on our faces.
The worst part of the situation was that we always had an elderly man(tailor) who sewed the clothes for us, and he usually did it in an old way, especially making it into an elderly-man style. OMG! I hated that moment to the core.
The idea of children moving around in their Christmas dresses from house to house to collect gifts and eat food was quickly killed off due to how my parents usually dressed us in the native attire style. Like, we would be so inferior in the midst of people.
I’m not saying my parents didn’t try. No, there were years we had the best Christmas with new “already made” wears bought in Onitsha. Yes, in those days, if Christmas clothes weren’t bought in Onitsha market, those clothes wouldn’t be rated high. Lol.
But look at me now—native wear is one of my best kinds of dressing.
Thanks for reading.
