Life on earth can be easy if we understand some basics of life which helps us not to stress about things that are ought to let be.
With what I've seen about life, it's natural for one to cry, look dull, look pitiable and also, it's natural for one to smile to cover up pain, appear rich when the pocket is empty and so many other circumstances.
One can do any of these freely depending on the situation they find themselves in. So anytime I come across someone appearing real or camouflaging pain in a smile, I don't stress it too much because I do that sometimes too.
Who do people hide pain in a smile?
Just like I am currently, I really have a lot of pressures in my life, these pressures are constantly poking my thoughts every now and then, I'm being reminded that I need this and that to be sorted out, I need a specific amount of money to settle some important and pressing needs. These pressures, if I were to allow it to tell of my face, people would see me and feel irritated or feel uninvited to approach me. Meanwhile, I own a business where I always meet people and imagine if these people were to approach me for a patronage and I give them a very negative response due to the pain I'm feeling inside. It wouldn't be nice at all. So with this, hiding my pain in a smile is very necessary. One mustn't appear to be "suffering" always with a teary or squeezed face, it's required that one should appear approachable all the time.
In a situation where the teary eyes expression can't be hidden, it's also fine and natural because hey, we are humans and there are things that are beyond our control.
When you go to the mourning ground, you can only support the family of the bereaved to reduce their emotional strain and this does not mean that they can just put on a smiley face even when the pain is mighty. We allow people to cry and mourn.
Another scenario is, when someone loses their properties, there's no need to fake smile while hiding the pain. Whenever you meet someone like that, especially at the moment it happens, don't think it too much. It's very natural. If they decide also to shadow their pain with a smiley face, that's actually a skill and they ought to be applauded when they do that.
