This is the third hottest year in the 39 year history of the satellite record. Is this enough to say the third hottest year ever which you will read in headlines from organizations like NOAA? Common sense would say no but extremism pays off, nothing like an article in Nature saying the ice caps are melting to keep carbon taxes alive.
Let's dig some into these numbers, both 1998 and 2016 were considerably warmer than last year with good reason. They both had super El Niños which caused havoc worldwide. The UAH dataset is observed by Dr.Roy Spencer, who is a world expert at interpreting the satellite data gathered on temperature. The UAH dataset does not show the out of control warming that NOAA's does.
As you can see from Dr.Spencer's chart is that there has been a warming trend since 1979. This is not in dispute by "denialists", what we dispute is the role man has played into that warming. This is the most raw temperature dataset that you are going to find on the internet today. As you can see besides 2 outlier years the temperatures never got above or below +/- 0.4C so how much of this "warming" is natural variability. Talking about natural cycles does not get you grants from the UN or the government. Politicized science takes away from the truth, if you want the truth you have to look towards the private sector. They can't lead their clientele astray on a political agenda it kills business.
