Schooling can look different from child to child...from family to family. At Kindred Acres we homeschool and that in itself can be different from day-to-day. Today we met up with our homeschool kids group at the local community art center and garden for a bit of 'public speaking' and show-n-tell. It was pumpkin and fall-themed. The kids had to bring a pumpkin craft, pumpkin type item (quite a few brought an actual pumpkin!), or any fall-themed item to show in a circle and share a bit about it.
They each got a turn to tell us why they picked the item they brought, how they feel about fall, what they love about it, etc.
Next we read a Fall Festival book together....
Some of the kids wrote poems about how they feel about fall! They stood up in front of the circle and read their poems to everyone.
They got to taste freshly roasted homegrown heirloom pumpkin puree in comparison to store-bought organic pumpkin puree. They ate organic homegrown roasted pumpkin seeds, sipped pumpkin-spiced tea, and enjoyed a few other pumpkin goodies.
Next, they ran around the garden and field for an hour or two, getting all their energy out, socializing, and just getting some sun and good ol' nature.
I find it so rewarding to be able to teach the children in a natural environment, where they are getting sun, fresh air, socialization, and playtime in the process of learning. It is, in my opinion, a much healthier way for children to learn and play vs being stuck behind a school desk inside an enclosed building all day with very little fresh air and sun. I'm blessed to be able to offer this option to my daughter.
When Kaliah and I were finished with Kids Club we grabbed a bite to eat (momma and daughter lunch date!) then headed to the library to pick up some new books that coordinated with the next two weeks worth of curriculum. By the time we got home she was tuckered out and crashed for a nice long nap. I'd say it was a successful day! ;)
