I believe that anyone can learn anything. But then again, this is coming from someone who can not speak his native language. Although it’s not entirely my fault because both my parents can not speak my fathers language, and the only language both my parents speak is my mothers language but for some reason I can really speak it well and it’s quite embarrassing. My English however is very good and currently the only language I am good at. If I can learn another language and mostly my native language there are certain things that must be put in place before that can happen. First I predict It would take at least three months of communication to be able to speak and understand my language all over again but most importantly it would mean that I do not need to struggle for my daily bread as that alone would stop me from learning anything at all.
I am not someone who can learn something as easily as some of the geniuses, This is why it would be a bit difficult to learn afresh but I know that under the right conditions I would be able to learn. I was three years old when I left Lagos, but the Yoruba I knew then is the same Yoruba I know now which is obviously not strong. My mum did not like that the children around there only cause in Yoruba so she made sure I did not associate with them. Fast forward to after we left, I stopped hearing the language as often as I used to and my mum would only speak to us in English or simple Yoruba which made me atoned more to English than Yoruba. This means that the best person to teach a new language is an undeveloped mind. But the second best person to teach a new language is a mind that is idle and that is why I said for me to quickly learn the language I must be in an environment where I do not lack anything which would make my mind able to easily assimilate new things.
But then there is another problem, My language is not as easy to learn as Yoruba, I find it too difficult and strong LOL. The people I have seen speak it are those who grew up speaking it or who have a genuine interest in learning new languages. Others just seem to get lost at a point because of how strong it is. Plus to be honest, I do not like how some of the words sound so it would be a bit difficult for me, However, I want to learn more about the my culture, so i hope someday in the midst of all these hustle I will be able to rest and truly appreciate my culture and learn more about my heritage so that my children can know their father tongue. But then considering the fact that it isn’t so popular and that you can not just learn it online like other popular languages, I think it will be hard to learn it just like that so at the end of the day I will need a space to myself for three months with people who only speak and understand my language which should force me to learn it as a survival instinct.
