A feeling of isolation was always present during my travels of Madagascar. Not only because it is an island in the southern hemisphere that is about as far away from most of the "developed" world as you get, but even within the country isolation was hard to overcome.
The roads are in serious disrepair and rarely paved. In fact, paved roads seemed reserved the larger cities and the connections between them. Not only that, cars are not accessible for the majority of the population. Most vehicles were for transport of goods or other tourists. For most locals, it was either small buses or walking between towns and villages, if you didn't own any zebu and a cart.
And then there's the fact that with an average wage of a couple of dollars a day, the thought of getting on a plane to another country for a couple of hundred dollars is prohibitively expensive.
Rarely a day goes by now that I don't think about how easy my life really is and how much freedom I have.
