Went on a jaunt a couple weeks back, down yonder to Corbin, in southeastern Kentucky. They'd been supposed to have their second annual Pride event back in June, but in the run up to the shindig, it's sole organizer was getting overwhelmed, and then then rumors of Ku Klux Klan threats started going around.

After a Facebook post detailing the situation drew offers of support and mutual aid, the event was postponed instead of cancelled, with the date pushed back to September 26th. We made the 2.5 hour trek to do a follow up to this piece for QueerKY.

Corbin is Kentucky Fried Chicken's hometown, but it was a darker bit of its history that was casting a shadow on Pride. See, back in 1919, a white mob had rounded up the two hundred or so black inhabitants of the town and threatened any that returned. Afterwards, Corbin remained a sundown town until a few decades back, and it was that history that made rumors of the Klan get taken seriously.

As it turned out, the Klan was nowhere to be found, just a bunch of people taking advantage of the lovely weather to have a gay old time.

As always, Happy Pride Y'all!
