A raging storm envelops an ancient forest, underneath the pelting shower of hail and debris, a Dire wolf walks.
His ashen gray coat battered by the unforgiving wind, but still, he strides, digging his claws on the deluge beneath him. Between his jagged teeth, a victim of nature's wrath dangles devoid of life.
Barely seeing anything in front, he moves, guided by an invisible red string.
Upon reaching a darkened delve on a small foothill, he shook his fur spraying the cold drench on its walls. He goes deeper, his eyes adjusted to the darkness, looking for the other end of the line, and alas, a blueish female wolf raised her head looking straight at him with eyes full of worry.
He walked closer, dropping his quarry in front of her.
She rub his neck with her face, he rested his on hers. His eyes caught sight of two young pups burrowed under their mother's tummy, he curve his lips upward baring his teeth as if showing a smile.
She pushed towards him the meager meal, he pushed it back, both of them stared at it like it was something divine. He ignored it, walked towards her side and rested, she snuggled closer to him.
The sound of the roaring thunder woke him.
From the entrance, a small stream of water slowly makes a path towards him. His heart beating in rhythm of the heavy rain, he stirred her, urging her to stand. She opened her eyes, dazed and confused but seeing the strangling fear on his face made her panic and immediately bit one of her pups and pass it to him.
Outside, the water is rising, strong winds carrying anything that is not braced to the ground, and the heavy downpour permeates everything it touches. His face contorted as he gave the sight a tremendous scowl, she rubbed his side making him look towards her — he nodded.
They move to higher ground, he shielded her from the relentless wind as they treaded along the nature forge river that is angrily making a path, where there were once none.
From his rear, he saw a glimpse of a sizeable tree branch heading towards them, he immediately pushed her aside. The projectile bashed his side, making him drop the pup before it carried him into the raging waters.
He rolled under the current, drowning, with enumerable things basting his body, he steeled his resolve and reeled himself towards the shore. His claws anchored, he dragged himself up — water violently poured out of his mouth as he rolled on solid ground.
Laying on the bedraggled earth, an illusion of a crimson thread painted his eyes. He raised his worn-down body and followed the river.
His lungs roared, silencing the storm for a split second, but it was enough to get the attention of the Saber-tooth cat which is pinning his partner beneath. She moved her head ever so slightly, enough to get a look on his face, the pups a few paces away barking at their assailant.
Challenged, the Saber-toothed turned, its movement sluggish from the evident torment that nature inflicted in both of them.
Eyes on one another, they both brandish their teeth and claw as they size each other, giving off a low guttural growl.
The Saber-toothed pounce, he skillfully moved aside and bit it on the neck, but its skin is thick, his fangs can barely wound it. A paw found itself on his body, pushing him hard to the ground. He stared at its wide opened jaw, instinct told him to run away but the weight of his opponent kept him from going anywhere.
A bluish shadow came across his sight, jumping above them. The Saber's paw lifted, he immediately rolled away then looked back, he saw her clinging on its hide, biting hard on its neck.
His eyes noticed the river is but a stone throw away from them. He drove back into the fray, biting on its leg causing the monstrosity to move towards it. She was thrown off. The Saber's sight trained on him, raising its claws but he met it with his fangs and drag it back to the ground.
Realizing what her partner is attempting, she supported him in corralling the beast and forcing it in a single direction.
Inch by grueling inch, they pushed it towards the river.
As the Saber-toothed backed away, its hind foot felt the cold rush of water, making it look back, the wolves found an opening and attacked the Saber, surprised and without room to maneuver it slip and fell into the water.
He stared at it as the current swept the monstrosity far away.
She rubbed his neck, he rested his head on hers, his eyes caught a glimpse of two young pups running towards them, he curve his lips upward baring his teeth as if showing a smile.
A ray of light shot across his eyes, he lifted his head, above, the dark clouds slowly disperse, and a seven-colored arc raced towards the blue sky.
Thank You For Reading 😁
This story is a fableor as close as it can get to being one. I particularly love them, I grew up reading Aesop's fables over and over again as a kid.
The Red Thread of Fate is an East Asian belief originating from Chinese mythology. It is commonly thought of as an invisible red cord around the finger of those that are destined to meet one another in a certain situation as they are "their true love". — Excerpt from Wikipedia.org and here is a link to the article. (I am East Asian 😀)
Dire Wolves, sadly they are already extinct, but here is a link if you are interested.
Saber-toothed cat, commonly known as Saber-toothed tiger, but sadly according to Wikipedia they are not related to tigers or any modern cats... yes, it is sad as I love cats too. Here is a link to my research.
Dawn, can also be defined as a beginning.
