Some months ago, I made the choice of becoming a web developer, the idea behind this choice didn't come from a love or a passion but, because I felt like web development could get me to where I wanted to be in life.
You see, as a graduate with a second-class upper degree, for the past four years, I have moved from job to job and the highest job which offered to pay me a 100$ absconded with my salary after I worked there for a month; imagine the frustration.
Because of these things and the high rate of unemployment in my country, I was looking forward to learning something that would make me “sellable” and after I started hanging around with a lot of “tech bros” as most call them in my country, I felt tech was the right place to go.
Now, as much as making the first decision to learn a particular tech skill is important, actually learning it is another thing and it takes a whole lot of determination and motivation; which most people do not have by their selves.
A few days ago, I wandered into a thread on Twitter where people spoke about how they had to quit tech because it wasn't easy for them to keep up, some tried different types but it still didn’t work out for them, so if you are a beginner in tech, what can be done differently?
Self Taught Vs Being Taught
First, you need to make a choice between learning by yourself and being taught by someone else, as someone who has gone through both, I will advice you to go through the being taught if you do not have the drive to push yourself.
If you feel like you can’t afford paying for physical classes, then being self taught and learning online through YouTube, etc, should be your choice.
Placing Your Eyes On Something
The easiest way to continue learning something in my opinion is to place your eyes on something; either tech is a means for money or a passion, either is fine but you need one for motivation.
Making Your Research
Finally, I feel like even though you have chosen all these, you should make your research, be sure of the language you want to start first in, your specialty, and all that because it is an essential part of your journey.
I personally knowing that I wasn't ready for anything hard, so I tried choosing the easiest or rather what I felt was the easiest path and that worked for me, I'll advise you to make your research and choose what you are comfortable with.
In Conclusion,
My friend would always say being a programmer isn't easy but if you can pull through, it might be worth it; or make you have sleepless nights.
Anyways, if you want to get into programming, take it easy and give yourself time, also remember that you aren't like everyone else.
