It has a wonderful box to pack itself in that box at times such action is needed. The box is tightly closed and strong, and it's safe inside. The box is actually the dorsal shell, or carapace, and the shell of the ventral surface, or plastron.
These images are for one species among the Asian box turtle. This is Amboina (Cuora amboinensis), referring to Ambon on Maluku Island, eastern Indonesia. But this one did not come from Ambon, but originated in Sumatra, western Indonesia. The scientific name is Cuora amboinensis couro (see here).
The thing that interests me the most when observing it is that facial expression. It has an olive-black head with 3 distinctive yellow stripes that mark the Amboina box turtle species. It's nice to watch this species behave there, even though it is actually more aquatic than many other box turtles. Unfortunately, the population of this species, it is said, has declined due to the rate of overexploitation, as well as, with its habitat in the wild having been heavily damaged. These turtles live mainly in the environment of rivers and swamps. I haven't had the fortune to find them in the wild, and I took these pictures at a zoo in Aceh.
