They are known as paper wasps, pollinators that play an important role in natural biological control. The term, of course, refers to a kind of home which they construct from dead wood fiber materials and plant stems which they collect and then mix with their saliva. They're social vespid wasps. Persistence and good cooperation then produce these polygonal-mouthed holes, cells for raising broods, a home for survival.
