When you put hands and oranges together...
It is very easy to create an endless pattern. Or a fragment of a pattern that you can join together as many times as you like.
Yet it is an immensely satisfying practice.
Over time I figured out that the part about any creative process that I enjoy the most is actually the creation. The process itself and not necessarily the end result.
Within the process there are so many beautiful sequences and esthetic situations, that I started to appreciate. That’s why I want to share them, as well as finished ideas and objects.
Recently I started to work also on creating patterns, usually they are meant to end up on fabric eventually. Sometimes I use Lino prints for that matter, at other moments serigraphy but in the beginning, there is the sketch drawn by hand.
How can you draw a pattern repeat?
Let me show you through the steps with an example.
…take a pice of paper and a pen, any pen, any paper it doesn't matter
...start drawing in the center (!) of the paper
…when you are done turn it around, draw lines, dividing the paper in four parts, then cut it in half. And stick it back together on the opposite part of where you cut.
…what I mean by that might look more obvious on the front side
...draw in the center, again
...halve the paper again, but the other way round (where you didn't cut yet) and tape the sheets back together again
...draw some more
...you can copy this piece a few times now, and you'll see that all the edges will fit together
...which, in this case, looks as the following
Isn’t it marvelous how you can scribble anything and turn it into a pattern repeat?
You could design and print out your own wallpaper! Just by coping this square as many times as you wish. Stick them together and you have an endless design stretching out in front of you.
Or you make it up nice, doesn’t have to be a scribble. Any amount of details you want to use, you can.
Isn’t that amazing?
...I can't wait to see what that will look like on fabric!
All photos are mine taken by me, so are the designs.
Thank you all to stopp by! Have a wonderful few last days of this year!
