In terms of the life we live and the genuine opportunities we explore while trying to put ourselves on a trajectory towards remarkable achievements, it seems different people have different reasons for diving into these opportunities.

Some of these reasons sound very fancy. Some people want to save humanity. Some want to make a name for themselves. Some that are born into poverty say they are only interested in changing the trajectory of how their life has been over the recent years.

I'm sure you also have your reasons for whatever you are working on. For all varying reasons, a factor most people bring to light is 'family'.

...To make our family proud.

I think this is up there with the very best reasons we can have for doing the great things we do. The thought of that alone is already sending shivers down my spine.

They say when in Rome..., but the good thing about family relationships is that it's a universal phenomenon. It's something we see everywhere and it's surely not limited to humans.

I've had the privilege of having thoughtful discussions with people from other continents and I've learned so much about the driving force that guides the steps they take. That weird obsession they have for being their best self and making a relentless effort to hit goals and attain success... It's partly because of the desire to make their family proud.

To put this into context, let's take a look at the parent-child relationship.

Parent-child relationship across various families comes with some variations that are unique to the family.

There are families where parents and their children discuss like mates. It's like two friends of the same age having a chat. In some other places, it looks more like a boss-employee relationship where the kids are not encouraged to speak freely or show an objection to what their parents say.

You know, regardless of the pattern visible in a parent-child relationship, the 'family love' is still there.

Whether it's a lovey-dovey type of love or a tough love between parents and their children, an undeniable fact is that parents always want the best for their kids. That's what I (at the very least) expect in a sane society.

Since they are already rooting for you, why not make them proud?

This isn't intended to pressurize anyone. You don't have to be an Elon Musk or a Cristiano Ronaldo to make your family proud. The way I like to see this desire to make our family proud is that we should first avoid morally unacceptable things.

Nobody wants to see a member of their family on the front page of a newspaper for the wrong reason. Once you can eliminate getting involved with acts that will likely bring embarrassment to you and your family, you can always be assured that you will succeed in making them proud.

Remember to also be proud of yourself. Even if you are far from achieving your heart's desires, be proud of the process.
