This tower was buit by the Genoese as the tower of Galata walls. The tower, whose walls collapsed in the 1509 earthquake, remained standing on it’s own. Among other purposes in the Ottoman era, the tower was the prison for captives working in the Kasımpaşa Dockyard in the 16th century. In the 18th century it was used as a fire watchtower.
It can be seen from most of İstanbul and is a historic part of the city. Galata Tower was built in 1348 back when the city was still Constantinople. Originally It was called the tower of Christ in Latin. When the Ottoman took the city, they renamed the tower Galata. The top of the tower boasts of a restaurant and an observation deck. The view from the deck is a complete panoramic of İstanbul and the Bosphorus.

Galata is widely considered to be Istanbul’s modern centre, so travellers will find many things to do near the tower. Personally, I really like walk around the tower. I would like to inform you that If you want to go to the top of tower, most probably that queues can be long. So, be prepared for that.
