"Last one to get to the beach is the bum," Mia giggled and ran.
"Hey! That's not fair!" Her childhood friend, Alesha, screamed after her. "Wait for me!"
Both eighteen-year-old ladies ran from the beach house down to the beach but Mia arrived first. She jumped up and down in excitement. "Hahaha, Alesha is the beach bum!"
Alesha arrived a few seconds later, breathing hard. She grinned and laid down on the sand. "Wow! It's been ages since we had this much fun."
Mia sat down beside her, taking in the breathtaking beauty of the blue-green water, the tiny foam converged at the bank and the clear, blue sky. After today, she and her childhood friend would not see each other for a long time and she would miss her thoroughly.
"Remember that smooth pumice stone we found and buried somewhere around here?"
Mia laid down beside her. "Yes. You think it would still be here? It's been like ten years. We were 7 or 8 years old."
Alesha grinned. "Wanna be surprised? Let's dig." She sprang up, picked up a stick, walked towards a spot on the beach close to some green plants and started digging. Mia joined her and they both dug together.
"I hope this is not a waste of my time, Alesha. My nails, ugh."
"C'mon, don't be such a sissy. I'm the one doing the digging."
Mia gasped. "Look!" Deep inside the sand was a smooth pumice stone. Alesha pulled it out and dusted some sand off it. She held out her palm to Mia.
"Take it with you. Let's meet back here after the first session. If you still have the stone, we will be friends for life."
Mia laughed, "don't be silly. We will always be friends. No matter what." But she took the stone from Alesha. A beach keepsake to remind her of the good times with her childhood friend.
