Mi abuela me miró y sonrió.
Salió sangre a borbotones.

Whenever we walked past the street
with the dark skies, mama would cover my eyes with her hands and turn my face the other way. She said it was forbidden to even look at the place. But unlike my mother, grandma would let me stare for as long as I wanted. She would let me sit on the pavement across the street and just soak in the moment, then she'll tell me stories. She’d watch me closely and intently. It was like she wanted to show me something or conjure something in me. Like a reaction. Also, unlike my mother, my grandma deterred me from being nice to strangers. “Your kindness would be the knife that cuts through”. She'd say to me every time.
I called the street Armageddon because it reeked of war, destruction, and ruin. Empty abandon. Dark clouds hovered over the street come rain or shine. It had the eerie air of wrath and abandonment. Strange as it was, I loved the feeling that the place erupted in me. It was that of longing and belonging. I always dreamed of crossing the barricades and getting lost in the soul of the ruined, silent, cold, and dark buildings. It was my fantasy.
In the middle of the street was a red pentagram. Legend had it that it was the blood of five witches. It was said that hundreds of years ago, a group of women that belonged to the most powerful cult in the region performed a ritual on that spot. They wanted to create a portal to the heavens and enter it as they please. The gods became angry. They discharged their wrath upon the earth and destroyed the place. The women disappeared and a pentagram appeared. Ever since the site had remained a wreck and the skies dark. Others said the pentagram protects the town from evil. It was declared a myth and no one knows for sure what happened there.
“What do you think happened?” My grandmother broke the silence as we sat on the pavement. Her voice was husky yet firm. She had an ambiance of command about her.
“The legend perhaps.” I shrugged and looked into her deep brown eyes. The years had made themselves known in the fine lines that etched her eyes when she squinted.
“Sometimes, legends are true but when they are passed down through generations, the facts and meanings begin to change. One thing remains constant. There are keepers born in every generation. They will continue to keep the truth and pass it on until the end of time”. My grandmother spoke while looking into space.
“How do you know this grandma?”
“Hmmh. Time will tell. Let me tell you a story. The AWAKENING it is called. Hundreds of years ago, Immortals once roamed this earth together with mortals. They lived in harmony until some of the immortals decided they wanted to be gods and take control of mankind. But it didn't go down without a fight. Some powerful mortals were able to rid the earth of these immortals by trapping them. But some of them remained. They still walk this earth disguised. They aren't powerful enough to do anything but they lurk in the corners watching. Waiting for the slightest opportunity. Only the blood of a descendant would free them. When they get it, they will return even bigger and stronger. They will take over the earth. So my dear, listen to me when I say, ‘don't talk to strangers”. My grandmother looked at me and smiled. She had very unusual ways of teaching me lessons.
She sighed and her fingers twitched. She touched my forehead affectionately. I felt a little shiver down my spine and my head hurt for a moment. Her hands turned so cold.
Many nights passed and my will to live my fantasy of Armageddon grew even stronger. One evening, I escaped into the night straight to Armageddon. The atmosphere was exactly the way I pictured it to be. Leaping from one ruined structure to another, I felt at one with the gloomy silence. It felt like I was where I was meant to be.
I wandered alone in the doom until I found myself standing in front of the pentagram. Suddenly the air turned colder and the hair on the back of my neck stood. I felt a presence as though someone was watching me. I turned around but there was no one. I began to hear voices like whispers.
“It’s her! It's the girl!”
The voices kept repeating. Bellowing filled the air then silence followed.
“Help please help”.
A frail voice from beside me called. I turned to look. It was a very old woman covered in a cloak. She seemed so weak and helpless. She put out her hands across from me. I wanted to help her up but I hesitated. She wasn't there some seconds ago or perhaps I didn't see her. My mother always taught me to be kind and help others in need. My grandmother however forbade it. “Your kindness will be the knife that cuts through”. I never understood that. I looked at the old woman again. I closed my eye and stretched my hands to help her up.
She then smiled. There was something sinister in her smile. Her eyes turned red. Before I could get a grip, she grabbed my arm. From inside her cloak, she retrieved a knife and cut me. The blade pierced through my arm. Blood came gushing out. Within the twinkle of an eye, she took the knife dripping with blood and placed it in the middle of the pentagram.
As soon as she did. The pentagram started to ignite. The clouds rumbled. A shiver ran down my spine. My head began to hurt in the same place my grandmother had touched it days before. I began to have these flashes. Much like memories but they were visions happening right before my eyes.
I saw a group of five women in a circle. In the middle of the circle was a portal. Bird-like creatures were erupting from it. The women were using their powers to secure the portal. Lightning and thunder struck. Light surged through their bodies and within a blink, they became the light that sealed the portal forming a pentagram.
I saw generations pass. The descendants of those five women kept the secret around the pentagram. I saw my grandmother amongst the eleventh generation of five women. They were the keepers.
A shrill sound filled the air and the visions ceased. The pentagram began to erupt in flames. My blood had ignited it. The old woman still standing in front of the pentagram spread her arms that spontaneously turned into wings. Hundred of bird-like creatures began to escape from the portal. They ascended, began spreading their wings, and hovered around the dark skies until they covered it completely.
As I held my arm, I stood there shaken and petrified to my bones. I had just witnessed the AWAKENING.
