I find that saying anything about vaccines these days ruffles some feathers so I want to be clear that this is a rabies vaccine and has nothing to do with all that stuff the biped human folk are arguing about all the time on social media these days.

Recently, we received a donation from a veterinarian in the area for us to continue our efforts to improve the living conditions of the local stray dog population, this time back at the Nai Sa Temple, which is one of our pet projects at the moment.

The animals here are delighted to see us when we pull up and I am convinced that they know the difference in sound that our vehicle makes as opposed to any of the others that come in here. Every time we are greeted with a bunch of wagging tails and happy faces.

Today we were here to administer shots though, and while this might scare the pants off of children and even adults, the dogs barely even notice that it is happening. If you have an animal you have probably noticed how incredibly resilient dogs and cats are when getting a shot. It's almost as though they don't even feel it.

While there is nothing terribly dangerous about accidentally double-dosing a dog with rabies vaccine over the course of months, two in a row could cause some bad side-effects so we did have to be careful to sort the dogs so that they don't get back in line for another shot. They are there for the treats that come afterwards... we all know this.

It is really a very easy process. One person distracts that dog at his or her head with a delicious snack and the other person gives them the shot. The dog is focused entirely on the attention and the snack so they don't even notice that you are giving them a shot. It's pretty remarkable really, out of the near dozen vaccinations we administered, not a single one of the dogs even reacted in any way to getting a shot.

Some dogs could hardly wait for their turn!

Rabies is currently not a very big problem in Thailand and at least for the small part of it that we live in, we would prefer to keep it this way and this is why we vaccinate every animal against rabies that we possibly can. Thankfully this medication is extremely inexpensive in Thailand and in this particular case it cost us nothing at all, which is great since we don't have any money!

After everyone got their "ouchies" we stuck around for a bit to play and hand out treats and also check for other potential issues such as parasites, potential cancerous growths, and other injuries and infections. Thankfully, none of the dogs at this temple appeared to have any issues and according to our inhabitant monk friends, all of the dogs were accounted for on that day.

So this was a great success and it is nice to have days like this where everything runs smoothly. If only all of our other operations were like this!
