Blessed Friday my dear and appreciated needleworkers, I hope you had an excellent week full of blessings. Today I want to share with you a little improvised project that I have been doing this week. It is a small basket crocheted with a technique similar to tapestry crochet.
Since my WIP projects have to wait a bit due to lack of material to finish them, I decided to make other projects with some of the yarns I still have straggling around.
For some time now I have wanted to knit a large purse using a technique similar to tapestry crochet, in which you work with 2 materials at the same time.
The thicker material is used on the inside of the fabric to give shape and texture to the fabric, and the thinner material is worked in low stitches wrapping the thicker yarn.
Before venturing into making a large wallet, I decided to practice this technique first and try different materials. So I took 10 meters of thick cotton cord and a roll of 3mm nylon and started knitting a small version of the wallet I want. The pattern of this wallet has an oval base and is knitted in a spiral with low stitches only, until the desired size is achieved. It has short handles as it is an ideal handbag for carrying things on a trip to the beach, which is precisely what I want to make the purse bigger for.
De todos modos, siempre es interesante experimentar con diferentes materiales y hacer combinaciones de colores, formas y texturas. Esto hace que nuestro arte sea más atractivo y divertido.
After I finished knitting this small version, I could see that nylon and cotton do not work very well together. Since cotton has a bit of stretch, I think it would work better for the outside; for the inside, it would be better to use a much stiffer material to give the desired structure to this wallet.
For the time being, I must say that I will keep looking for a thicker material with less elasticity to be able to weave a purse with a basket-like structure. This was a very interesting exercise even if the final result was not as expected. It was a pleasure for me to share this experiment with you.
Greetings and blessings.
