Even though as I am really not a big fan of flying in general, the shots from the sky never seem to amaze me, and I would always choose a window seat if the option is there in some kind of way.
That isn't always necessarily the case as often while departing from the Netherlands and crossing over Germany, it feels like all of the view (and peace and quiet) is taken and eaten up by the clouds.
That's the part when I am restless. When there is no overview, no horizon and no landmarks to see for me. That's when small curves turn into a game of balance and it feels like the plane is heeling over, even though the reality of this is that this is only a 1% angle or something in there.
Ever seen these kind of circles in the water? They are fish farms and a lot of money is made over there
It also helps that by now I am aware of that during landing time that often some 90 degrees turns have to be made to get the right path towards the landing strip, and that also the big turns take out the remaining speed.
Ow well, I guess I will never be a true fan of it all. But at least I'm going even though it costs me a couple of years of my life stress wise.
So what I really like to do is take out the map of the route that I am flying over and mentally connect the landmarks that I am seeing to where we are on the map.
Sometimes that isn't that easy, because you really don't always have the best idea of how far you can see from the sky in distance.
The islands of Paxos and anti Paxos just chilling over there
I love it when you are passing these islands that you can literally see the boats hovering and moving around these island, as if you are watching a traffic scene happening at that moment in slow motion.
The bridge crossing heading to Dubrovnic
And what about just seeing this bridge here crossing the water. I'm always imagining how many cars are passing that bridge at the moment when I am watching it and that feels kind of weird.
But all of this makes it more fun in the sky. Seeing where you are, getting a feeling of what all is correct in topography in general. I mean...even having an idea which country is next to the other, that is already difficult enough for most people at the moment.
There is always something interesting when heading down South crossing the Alps. Often the Alps are sort of a boundary of the weather differences between the Northern and the Southern part of Europe.
That's not that weird actually, as this is the region when airflow and wind bumps up into those mountains and heads on up.
So this is also the region where often flying is a bit more bumpy which I am not a fan of. But when I look outside and I see what is going on, it stresses me a lot less.
See the waves here in the clouds? You can also see them from the ground, but you can also feel the when you are flying over them
But once over the Alps, that is when stable weather always reaches and flying is more like watching a tv-series with everything that you can see over there.
The most cool things of course are when you are getting a bit closer to the ground and seeing the details of places where you have been before to take a good look at it from a different angle.
This is Preveza marina which is actually a gigantic marina looking like this is kiddy stuff, and with 'Hospital Bay'. in the background as a big anchoring spot
These kinds of moments make me happy when I recognize stuff where I have already been once in another time. That is when the stress fades and the actual enjoying of the sky line is there.
It isn't always about where you are heading to, it is also about what you see along the way and mentally take it with you.
I mean mountains in the background and some cute shore lines with little villages there to be seen it just fantastic. That is why we go to other spots.
To see all what the earth has to showcase to us, and enjoy the beauty of it.
