Rattlesnake Point

This conservation area is located along the Niagara Escarpment.
Not named for rattlesnakes, in fact there are no rattlesnakes in the area, it received it's name for the winding nature of the escarpment, which is similar to a snake in appearance.
This time of year hiking is popular here, with the leaves.....
changing colour. The views are extraordinary.
Most of the trails follow the edge of the escarpment, which is not a fault line. Rather a ribbon of Dolomite that runs over 700 miles. The existing rock surrounding it is soft shale type and erodes much faster. Leaving a cliff. The most.....
noticable feature of the escarpment is Niagara Falls.
Other then extensive hiking trails, rock climbing is a popular pass time here.
Another interesting feature is the discovery of the age of cedar trees along the cliff.
Researchers have been studying the Eastern White Cedars which are very hardy and have found in Rattlesnake Point a 588 year old tree found that was only 3.2 m in height, or ....

Other parts of the escarpment, researchers found cedars that ranged from 300 to 700 years old.
They fully expect to find.....
1,000 year old cedar?
one over 1,000 years old eventually.
The combination of a hardy, strong tree, with little soil, large temperature variations, little soil and exposure to the elements, as wind, is a combination that results in the aged trees.
