So, I hope that my visit to this old road and side alleys along the old canal would reveal the secret in my dreams one day. I did wonder if I used to have a house in this area or along the canal. I started my walk from the bus stop near the Robinson mall and went straight towards Yannawa Temple. The old canal is just opposite the old Buddhist temple.
The atmosphere was rather eerie as there was hardly any traffic on this usually busy road. I was glad to see that the canal remained the same physically; there was no construction work so local people could be left in peace. Local authorities often liked to initiate small building projects so that they could spend some money from the yearly budget. Some projects could be beneficial to local people if these required local participation and consultation.
The local people along the canal was lucky to be involved in the street art project to liven up the surrounding and atmosphere. It was hoped that this project would attract more tourism to this quiet area so local shops would enjoy more business. But the spread of the new coronavirus has dampened all tourism into Thailand. The sleepy and quiet vibes along the canal made my walk very pleasant. I could take photos of old houses and graffiti as often as I wanted without disturbing occasional pedestrians.
To my surprise, I saw several stray cats along the canal. They were probably living under some old houses and abandoned buildings along the canal. Luckily I spotted two kind ladies going around the canal feeding the stray cats and kittens. The younger lady told me that very few people here like cats so no one would feed these cats. She felt she had to feed them so they could stay alive. Then I met an elderly lady who limped while walking across to the other side of the canal.
This lady surprised me as she greeted me in English! I must have looked like a Japanese or Korean tourist again. She told me she used to sell ice cream to tourists at sightseeing places when she was a young girl. She even showed off her Vietnamese and French phrases. We had a nice chat and she complained to me about some neighbours who kept chasing the stray cats. These cats were so lucky to have two protectors in this area.
I had a good time looking at the colourful street art and peeped at some old houses through old fence. I thought my previous house might have been a bit further down closer to the river as only well to do people could afford to keep a stable of horses and carriage. I couldn’t recall all the details of my recurring dreams of riding in a carriage in the night in the old Siam. I felt that I was a public figure who had to travel incognito so as to avoid attracting public attention and for safety precaution too. Siam during the time of European colonisation was full of informants and sleeper cells too. Lots of Thais and Chinese people became suddenly rich and could establish themselves as the new rich class and enter high society by foreign sponsored funds. This reminded me of the foreign charitable foundations who continued to sponsor the many NGOs in Thailand nowadays.
History seems to be repeating itself as if there’s a natural cycles of changes or upheavals in a society. Perhaps this was partly due to karmic energy. But what is yet to come would seem as impactful as the final war in the Indian legend of Mahabharata. However, I do hope that we would all be gone before the final showdown many years into the future. So, I reminded myself to feel all the wonder of being alive, waking and talking to kind strangers who felt those stray cats’ suffering. There is magic in human mind and consciousness but most people just don’t have the time and space to get in touch with that source of compassion and healing power for all sentient beings. It’s only through love and compassion that one could get in touch with that stream of divine compassion far away in other dimension.
หลังจากที่อยู่กับอากาศแบบมัวๆ มีแต่เมฆสีเทาเป็นแถบหลายวัน แทบไม่เห็นท้องฟ้าสีสดใสเลย พอวันไหนอากาศดี ท้องฟ้าแจ่มใส เราจึงรู้สึกว่าอยากออกไปเดินเล่นใกล้ๆแม่น้ำ หรือคลองโบราณ เพื่อเป็นการเปลี่ยนบรรยากาศและ เพิ่มพลังงานให้ตนเอง จะได้มีความกระตือรือร้นในการทำงานต่อไป เราก็เดินทางไปที่ท่าน้ำสาทร เพื่อเดินเล่นต่อไปทางด้านวัดยานนาวา เดินจากป้ายรถเมล์ที่หน้าห้างสรรพสินค้าโรบินสันเพียงห้านาที ก็ถึงหน้าวัดยานนาวา. แถวนั้นมีบรรยากาศเงียบผิดปกติ แทบไม่มีรถยนต์บนถนนเลย เราก็ข้ามถนนไปฝั่งตรงข้าม ให้สังเกตราวสะพานเก่าที่ยังหลงเหลืออยู่ แต่ก่อนคลองนี้คงวิ่งผ่านไปในวัดยานนาวา เพื่อออกสู่แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาต่อไป นั่นเป็นทางสัญจรของคนไทยสมัยที่ยังไม่มีการตัดถนน ทุกคนก็ต้องพายเรือกันในสมัยนั้น
เราดีใจที่เห็นคลองเก่าแก่ และบ้านเรือนโบราณยังคงหลงเหลืออยู่บ้าง. หน่วยงานท้องถิ่นมักชอบของบมาพัฒนาแหล่งเสื่อมโทรม หรือปรับปรุงภูมิทัศน์ โดยไม่ได้ศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ หรือถามความคิดเห็นของชาวบ้านที่อาศัยอยู่ในที่นั้นมาหลายรุ่นแล้ว ผลคือการพัฒนาล้มเหลวในทุกด้าน ยกเว้นด้านการสร้างวัตถุใหม่ๆ ที่อาจจะไม่ได้ใช้ประโยชน์โดยคนในท้องที่ แต่คนแถวนี้โชคดีที่มีการมาขอให้มีส่วนร่วมในการอสดงความคิดเห็น และขอความร่วมมือด้วย ทำให้โครงการสร้างสรรค์งานศิลป์ บนกำแพงบ้านคนตามคลองแห่งนี้มีความสำเร็จด้วยดี.
ตอนแรกเขาหวังว่าจะเป็นการดึงดูด ให้นักท่องเที่ยวมาเดินเล่นถ่ายรูป ซึ่งจะทำให้ร้านค้า ร้านกาแฟแถวนี้มีลูกค้าและ รายได้พิเศษ. แต่บังเอิญมาเจอกับโคโรนาไวรัส ทำให้การ
ท่องเที่ยวซบเซาไปทั้งประเทศทีเดียว เราก็เลยได้เดินถ่ายรูปเ่นอย่างเงียบๆสบายใจ เรามีความผูกพันกับที่แถวนี้ เราเคยฝันว่านั่งรถม้าาทางถนนเส้นนี้อยู่บ่อยๆในอดีตชาติ เราก็อยากรู้เหมือนกันว่า เราเคยมีบ้านอยู่แถวนี้หรือเปล่า การมาเดินเที่ยวแถวนี้อาจจะทำให้เราฟื้นความทรงจำได้บ้างกระมัง
เราเดินไปเจอหญิงใจคนแรก ที่กำลังเอาอาหารไปเลี้ยงแมวเร่ร่อนหลายตัวที่ริมคลอง บางตัวมีลูกแมสองตัว ท่าทางตื่นกลัวคนแปลกหน้ามาก เดินไปอีกหน่อยเราก็เจอหญิงสูงอายุอีกคนกำลังเดินไปเลี้ยงข้าวแมว คนนี้ตลกมาก เขาทักเราด้วยภาษาอังกฤษ เขาคงคิดว่าเราเป็นนักท่องเที่ยวญี่ปุ่นอีกแล้ว เรามักจะโดนคิดว่าเป็นชาวต่างชาติเสมอ เขาพูดได้สามภาษา เพราะตอนเป็นเด็ก เขาเคยขายไอศกรีมให้นักท่องเที่ยวนั่นเอง แมวเร่ร่อนแถวนี้โชคดีมาก ที่มีคนมาช่วยเหลือดูแลถึงสองคน ทั้งสองคนบ่นให้ฟังว่าคนแถวนี้ไม่ค่อยชอบแมว จึงไม่ชอบเลี้ยงแมว และชอบไล่แมวด้วย เราก็ขอบคุณที่เขามีเมตตาเลี้ยงข้าวแมว
คราวนี้เราได้ดูภาพสวยๆตามกำแพง ดูแมววิ่งเล่นและคุยกับชาวบ้าน เราก็พยายามอยู่กับปัจจุบันอย่างมีสติ. เพราะ เรารู้ว่าอนาคตนั้นค่อนข้าวจะโกลาหล และปั่นป่วนพอสมควร เราโชคดีมากที่มีสุขภาพดีและ มีชีวิตที่ปลอดภัยกว่าคนอื่นๆในโลกนี้ เราก็หวังว่าจะมีปาฏิหาริย์ มาช่วยปกป้องและช่วยผ่อนหนักให้เป็นเบาด้วยเทอญ
