Wednesday Walk: admiring street art by the canal,
The canal was very quiet with refreshing breezes and peaceful vibe. This lockdown period was incidentally good for visiting sightseeing sites and enjoy the surroundings in solitude. I told myself to visit places of my childhood and famous old temples in order to take photos as my collection of historical record. In ten years’ time, these places might change so much that I would need to remind myself what they looked like in the past. The last two years have changed my attitude quite a lot: I no longer take familiar things for granted.
The renovation project of the old canal was intended to revive tourism in the old part of Bangkok. With the help of local volunteers, some famous artists and sponsors, the street art project along the canal turned out very well and it got a lot of publicity two years ago. We saw lots of Thai tourists during the weekends. The canal was very popular among teenagers and people who came along in period costumes for taking photos with colourful street art.
Before the spread of the pandemic, this was the best place to spend the evening. There were street food stalls, restaurants, snack stalls, beer and wine bars, souvenir shops and live jazz band including a few buskers. The atmosphere was very cheerful and groups of people came to party along the canal. I was lucky to stumble on this place on my way to Chinatown. So, I did enjoy the evening party mood at the canal long time ago.
I recently went back to check out the canal and to experience a completely different atmosphere during the lockdown of Bangkok. I had more time to be alive to absorb the strangely deserted canal and the local market was completely closed as if all the people were all hiding in a bomb shelter during the Second World War. The empty space seemed to shrink the size of paintings on the wall along the canal.
I could not find any stray cats nor could I hear any dogs barking like in the past. Stray cats also went into hiding from Covid. I wished some aliens would just drop by to take their selfies with street art . Then I would have someone to chat with during my walk. I would probably ask them to help in neutralising the new coronavirus and COVID around the world. They could read my mind, that’s why they decided not to come to take some selfies.
Wishing you peace, good health and prosperity.
Stay strong and cheerful.
