Whenever I feel dazed and my energy becomes rather fuzzy lacking in focus concentration, I would visit my favourite temple. This old temple was established by linking two small old temples together during about a hundred years ago. The renovated temple is now known as Wat Bowornnives or Wat Boworn. This temple is within the old city wall and was the residence of several famous monks including the previous Samgha Patriarch (the Head of the Buddhist monks in the country). Besides King Rama9 or King Bhumiphol was ordained as a monk here.
So, this temple has been under the patronage of several Kings as several princes became monks and resided in this temple. The standard for monks in this temple is very high as laypeople demands high level of scripture learning and strict adherence to Sangha rules. Consequently, years of strict practice and routine chanting ceremonies have embedded this temple with unique kind of vibes and quiet atmosphere. Most people could feel this high frequency which suddenly calm them and makes them quieten down and walk much slower than usual.
No wonder I always feel at ease just walking around admiring the different periods of architecture in this temple. Luckily many old trees are still well looked after and a reminder of the old canal could be seen offering shelter to some turtles.
The dominant architecture is traditional Thai design since Ayutthaya period while the Chinese influence could be seen during the reign of King Rama 3. During this Reign, Siam became very wealthy from trading with Chinese merchants. Hundreds of Chinese ships could be seen crowded along the Chao Phraya River. That’s why so many old Chinese statues could be seen decorating the temple. Keeping bonsai trees has become fashionable among the rich class, in royal palaces and temples.
The Western architectural influence started to enter into Siam during the Reign of King Rama 4 as he was the first King who learned to speak and write English fluently. All the princes and princesses had private English tutor in the palace. So, from the Reign of King Rama 5, Italian designers and English engineers were working for the King’s building projects.
There are several well preserved Western designed buildings in Wat Boworn. Some buildings have both Thai and Italian design concepts. I think these buildings reflected the ‘belle epoch’ in contemporary Thai history. The impact of colonisation period in South-East Asia had weighted heavily on our country’ societal fabric which could be seen as an opening of an old wound in present political climate. Those who never got properly educated about Siamese history would not understand the deep rooted seeds of attrition sown by colonisation.
Walking around looking at old trees, I do wonder if one of them could tell me stories of the past. Many rolayties and courtiers must have been walking in quiet contemplation over the impeding danger of losing Siam to the colonising power; they would have to seek quiet moments inside the Main Hall and to do some prayers. I feel like I was walking back in time past whenever I visit this temple. And I am very grateful to the foresight and hard work these past ‘unsung’ hero’s had done for the country; Thailand was not colonized by Western powers.
I was quite relieved that these past non-glorified ancestors do not have the ability to remote viewing the future of Thailand. Had they been able to do so, their hearts would certainly be broken. Well, Buddhism teaches us about the changing conditions of all things and to let go. Whatever will happen in the future, I still firmly belief in the imperceptible influence of all the sacred vibes hidden by previous generations to protect our country from dangers and extreme calamity. So, it has become our duty to continue the good karma and goodness contemplation in order to replenish the well of sacred and protective energy.
เมื่อเดือนก่อนเราพึ่งไปเดินออกกำลังกายที่วัดบวร และไปไหว้พระขอพรมาด้วย เวลาว้าวุ่นใจและเหนื่อยใจกับสภาพสังคมเราจะไปเดินดูต้นไม้ และความงามของสถาปัตยกรรมที่วัดบวรซึ่งเป็นวัดโปรดของเราวัดหนึ่ง ความจริงวัดนี้มีมาแต่สมัยอยุธยา แต่ทรุดโทรมมาก และมีวัดเก่าอีกวัดหนึ่งอยู่ติดกัน เมื่อมีการสถาปนาพระนครในสมัยรัชกาลที่1 จึงมีการรวมสแงวัดที่เก่ามากเข้าด้วยกันเป็นวัดเดียว แล้วสร้างวัดใหม่ วัดนี้จึงกลายเป็นวัดที่มีบริเวณกว้างใหญ่สำหรับวัดในเขตเมือง และยังมีการรักษาต้นไม้เก่าแก่ไว้หลายต้น และมีบริเวณสวนที่ร่มรื่นน่าเดิน และยังคงหลงเหลือบางส่วนของคลองสมัยโบราณที่เป็นเส้นทางสัญจร ไปสู่คลองต่างๆและออกสู่แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา
วัดบวรนิเวศน์หรือวัดบวร เป็นวัดที่ได้รับการทำนุบำรุงค่อนข้างมากกว่าวัดอื่นๆ เพราะที่นี่เคยเป็นที่บรรพชาของเขื้อพระวงศ์ระดับสูงมากหลายพระองค์ พระเจ้าอยู่หัวในรัชกาลที่9 ก็เคยทรงผนวชที่วัดบวร และในหลวงรัชกาลที่4ก็เคยทรงจำพรรษาที่วัดหลายสิบปี ดังนั้นวัดนี้จึงมีความสัมพันธ์กับในวังหลวงมายาวนาน การออกแบบตึกจะเป็นแบบไทยโบราณ และมีอิทธิพลของศิลปจีนเข้ามาในสมัยรัชกาลที่3 เป็นการสะท้อนความสัมพันธ์ทางการค้าระหว่างสยามและพ่อค้าชาวจีน ในบริเวณวัดจึงมีรูปปั้นแกะสลักจากจีนประดับมากมาย และยังมีต้นบอนไซขนาดใหญ่มีอายุหลายสิบปีตกแต่งในบริเวณวัดด้วย
เราชอบเดินดูอาคารและตึกที่มีการผสมผสานทั้งศิลปไทยและจีนเข้าด้วยกัน การออกแบบตึกแบบตะวันตกเริ่มมีให้เห็นในสมัยรัชกาลที่5 และ6เป็นต้นมา ซึ่งก็สะท้อนอิทธิพลของวัฒนธรรมตะวันตกที่เริ่มแผ่ขยายเข้ามาในเอเซียอาคเนย์ในยุคของการล่าอาณานิคม เราเดินไปก็อดคิดถึง ความเป็นไปได้ในอดีตที่วัดแห่งนี้คงเคยเป็นที่ที่ คนในอดีตตลอดจนเจ้านายระดับสูงมาเดินเล่น เพื่อหาความเงียบสงบท่ามกลางความสับสนวุ่นวายในบ้านเมือง ที่ต้องพยายามเอาประเทศให้รอดจากการล่าอาณานิคมจากประเทศทางตะวันตก เราจินตนาการไปว่ามีผู้คนเดินไปกราบพระในโบสถ์เพื่อขอให้ช่วยคุ้มครองสยามให้รอดปลอดภัย และยังเห็นคนโบราณนั่งสวดมนต์กันในยามวิกฤต
ถ้าต้นไม้เก่าแก่สามารถพูดได้ เราก็จะถามและขอให้เล่าเรื่องราวต่างๆในอดีต ว่าคนสมัยก่อนเขาคิดการแก้ไขปัญหากันอย่างไร นี่โชคดีมากที่คนสมัยก่อนไม่สามารถมองไปในอนาคตได้ ถ้าเขารู้ว่คนไทยสมัยนี้ไม่ค่อยรู้จักประวัติศาสตร์และไม่หวงแหนเอกราชของประเทศสักเท่าไร เขาเหล่านั้นคงต้องเศร้าเสียใจมาก เราเชื่อว่าคนสมัยก่อน ได้ทำความดีและมีศีลที่เพรียบพร้อม ทำให้สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ต่างๆช่วยอนุเคราะห์ให้คลาดแคล้วภยันตรายทั้งปวง ฉะนั้นสมัยนี้เราจึงต้องช่วยกันรักษาศีลและทำบุญกุศลให้มากๆ เพื่อจะได้ส่งผลดีต่อประเทศชาติโดยรวม บ้านเมืองจะได้มีความสงบร่มเย็น และเจริญก้าวหน้าต่อไปอีกยาวนาน
