I was so glad that I decided to visit my old friend at her office two weeks ago. The whole place was very quiet and empty as most people were working from home. My old friend has been working at the office of a charitable foundation which locates on the top floor of the old building next to the Faculty of Economics in the oldest university in Bangkok. We often went out for lunch together in the past but lately it has been more convenient to drop by for tea at her office. Then we could enjoy our private chat about sensitive subjects; my friend often surprised me with strange stories and gossips about high society people. So, having tea at her office was never dull and she always had some snacks too.
The other attraction for my frequent visit to her office is the green surrounding of the foundation’s building. There are many old trees in this area with lots of noisy crows, pigeons, some wild birds and squirrels. But I would go there for the old trees and their vibes. I just loved the quiet atmosphere when there was no one around as they were very afraid of the new virus. I would have the whole place to myself as if it was my own garden; I could observe these trees for hours. Those security guards must have thought I was very strange.
That day something told me to take time to enjoy myself and take many photos of those old trees. Some of them have been there before several buildings were built. So, these trees could hold a lot of secrets and history of the place. The land was bought by King Rama V with the intention of building the first university in Siam. The King did have a tour of several European countries; he visited Cambridge University and the famous Eton school in England.
So, when he returned to Siam; several building projects started to roll out during his reign. This period saw the rapid modernisation of Siam. The first road was built, the first boarding school for boys similar to Eton was established; people started to see trams, railway stations, hospitals, colleges, bridges, post office, steamed engines and all modern Western goods. The King worked very hard to improve the country’s chance of maintaining the sovereignty of the nation with independence from colonisation. The stress of the country’s burden must have played a part in taxing his health and shortened the duration of his reign. He did express his disappointment of not being able to stay on a little longer to see through all his project; he was seen to shed a few tears being passing away. So, he did not live to see the opening of the first university in Siam. Fortunately, his Eton educated son and older royalties continued the former King’s policies on diplomatic relations with other nations.
I wonder whether some of these old trees could have witnessed the royal carriages which often came to this site; they would have seen the King consulting his advisers and planners about this building project. This was where the King had such dreams and high hopes for the future of his beloved country and people. The King spent his private fund on this project. He was determined to make education freely available to all rich and poor people. But the present reality of hiking tuition fees and making profits by all administrators who continued to increase their salaries have meant that only rich families could afford to send their children to the oldest university in Thailand. There were no mechanism for check and balance as these politicised intellectuals had set up rules to protect their powerful positions and status quo.
I was glad that the King had gone years ago so he could not witness the drastic changes in our society. I was afraid he would be heartbroken and very disappointed with how educated people have been exploiting this famous institution for their own gain. Corruptions are a common practice at all level of government and among civil servants nowadays. I wished these old trees could scold these corrupting people when they walked past.
These trees make such a big difference to the busy and noisy roads around the area. Once you are inside the compound, time seems to slow down while the air seems sweeter under the old trees. These trees have become a sanctuary for many birds, squirrels, insects, snakes and lizards. The cool shade under these trees are always healing and calming for my hectic brain activities. Sometimes I would enjoy my pack lunch under these trees in the past. I had no idea that my little escape from the busy Bangkok traffic would become good old days from this week onwards.
Crazy administrator had put up notices on all the gates prohibiting people who didn’t get the vaxx from entering the compound. King Rama V would
have been very upset by this tyrannical decision. The administrator does not own the land nor the buildings, and the job description does not give him the authority to give such an absurd order. I doubt whether a university committee would dare making such an announcement. The coronavirus has opened up the opportunity and excuses for authoritative figure heads to assume dictatorship. There are no ways for accountability or open debate on public utilities.
I hope those trees’ spirits and guardians would send these power-hungry people many frightening dreams about hell fire and hungry ghosts! I had no idea that these photos of old trees would be my last collection as it was the last time I could drop by to have tea with my friend at her office again. These trees were very psychic, they told me to take as many photos as possible and to take time to enjoy myself. Luckily my friend didn’t go to work that day so I could spend more time walking around the area.
The sky was bright blue with light breezes in the afternoon. I had been there quite regularly that the local security guards became friendly with me. So we could chat about all kinds of subjects including the distrust for the jabs. One person told me that authority had not been telling the truth about the number of dead and injured people from the jabs. That place is only five minutes’ walk from the hospital so most guards saw the ambulances and numerous people who needed treatments after the jabs.
Unfortunately, they were all forced to take the jabs when their turns had arrived. I was speechless by the actions of the so called top intellectual elites in the country. These people in positions of power tend to behave like little emperors giving orders which the true King would never dream of giving for fear of bad karma. I have to beseech the land’s guardians and those trees’ spirits and angels! I do hope they wound join force to resist the negative and nefarious figureheads’ decisions on forcing all employees to have jabs.
สองสัปดาห์ก่อนเราแวะไปหาเพื่อนเก่า ที่ทำงานที่มูลนิธิที่ตึกประชาธิปกฯ สมัยก่อนเราจะไปกินข้าวกลางวันกันข้างนอก ไปกินไอศกรีมที่ร้านภูฟ้า ตอนหลังนี่เราต้องเปลี่ยนเป็นมาแวะกินนํ้าชาที่ห้องทำงานเพื่อนแทน. ซึ่งก็ดีเหมือนกัน เพราะเรามีความเป็นส่วนตัว และสามารถพูดคุยเรื่องราวต่างๆนานา เพื่อนคนนี้มักจะมีเรื่องแปลกๆ เกี่ยวกับพวกไฮโซมาเล่าให้เราฟัง นอกจากนี้เพื่อนเราชอบทำกล้วยปิ้งให้กิน ปิ้งกันร้อนๆในครัว น่ากินมาก เรากับเพื่อนชอบอะไรเหมือนกันหลายอย่าง จึงสนุกกับการดื่มน้ำชาและคุยกันทุกเดือน
วันนั้นเราแปลกใจมาที่สถานที่ ค่อนข้างเงียบเหมือนปิดไปเที่ยวช่วงสงกรานต์ แต่กลายเป็นการให้คนทำงานจากที่บ้านแทน เพื่อนก็เลยไม่ได้เข้ามาที่สำนักงาน. เราจึงมีเวลาเดินเล่นดูต้นไม้ และสถานที่โดยรอบ เราได้ยินต้นไม้บอกให้เราถ่ายรูปต้นไม้เก่าแก่เหล่านี้ให้มากเท่าที่เราต้องการ อากาศดีมาก ท้องฟ้าสดใสและมีลมพัดมาเรื่อยๆ ทำให้เราเดินเล่นอย่างสบายใจ. เรามีเวลาจ้องมองต้นไม้ กิ่งก้านสาขาขนาดใหญ่ ที่แผ่ไปรอบข้างมากกว่าสามสิบเมตร บรรยากาศใต้ต้นไม้ดีมาก เวลาเข้ามาเดินเล่นที่นี่ ก็เหมือนหลุดเข้ามาในอีกโลกหนึ่ง เวลาก็เดินช้าลง เราเดินเล่นถ่ายรูปราวกับว่า ที่นั่นเป็นสวนของเราเอง
เราพึ่งเห็นข่าวว่าผู้บริหารติดป้าย ห้ามไม่ให้คนที่ยังไม่ได้ฉีดยาเข้ามาในบริเวณเด็ดขาด. นี่ก็กลายเป็นว่าเราคงไม่มีโอกาสไปนั่งดื่มน้ำชา และเดินเที่ยวที่นั่นอีกในอนาคต มิน่าเล่าต้นไม้จึงบอกให้เราถ่ายรูปไว้เป็นที่ระลึกมากมายหลายรูป เราคิดไม่ถึงว่าจะมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงแบบไม่คาดคิด และคนจะกล้าออกคำสั่งแบบเผด็จการรวบอำนาจ โดยไม่มีการิภิปรายในที่ประชุมอย่างเปิดเผย และเป็นไปตามหลักการประชาธิปไตย ที่ต้องมีการตรวจสอบ และแสดงความรับผิดชอบต่อการตัดสินใจ ที่จะมีผลกระทบต่อคนที่มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องด้วย เวลาเกิดความเสียหายจะได้มีกระบวนการเยียวยา และทดแทนค่าเสียหายด้วยตามกฎหมาย ผู้บริหารไม่ใช่เผด็จการที่คิดจะตามใจตนเอง โดยไม่เคารพสิทธิของคนอื่น และ ไม่สนใจว่าไปละเมิดสิทธิและ ริดรอนเสรีภาพของคนอื่นในสังคม ราวกับว่าตนเองเป็นผู้มีอำนาจเหนือชีวิตและทรัพย์สินของคนอื่น
เราคิดว่าวันดีๆในอดีตคงเป็นความทรงจำที่มีค่าสำหรับเรามาก. เพราะในอนาคตจะมีคนที่เป็นเผด็จการ และลุแก่อำนาจมากขึ้น โดยฉวยโอกาสของตำแหน่งหน้าที่ ในการออกคำสั่งตามอำเภอใจมากขึ้น ผลกรรมก็คงตกมาอยู่กับ คนทั่วไปที่หาเช้ากินคํ่าที่มีสภาพย่ำแย่เพราะ การตัดสินใจที่ไร้คุณธรรมของผู้กุมอำนาจนั่นเอง
