Last month I dropped by my old friend’s house for afternoon tea. Her house is located quite far away from central Bangkok, so traveling time could be about an hour during normal traffic. During the lockdown, people tended to stay at home for fear of catching the coronavirus. Since the lockdown had ended, I could start to socialise again. I always like to drop by at her place as there are big trees around the house and a swimming pool at the back of the house.
Everything got crammed up into small space. The parking space is always a wonderland for me as there seemed to be more cars piling into very limited space. I couldn’t imagine how the drivers managed to park cars in such tight space.
I was surprised to see a gym above the workshop where racing bikes were hung from the ceiling and all kinds of tool boxes were scattered on the floor. There are two pilots in this family and one of her brothers is a car mechanic. I have never encountered such a family with so many different eccentricity.
My friend showed me the family gym but I found some paintings on top of the lockers. To my surprise, my friend has been doing painting and drawing during the three months’ lockdown. She told me that one brother just opened a small fast food restaurant and he borrowed some thirty of her oil paintings to decorate the eatery. I had never known that my old friend has become an artist during the past few years.
It started off with abstract drawing of Monet’s garden and ponds. Lately my friend has been experimenting with oil painting. She said she preferred to paint fuzzy or blurred pictures as things didn’t have to be exact or realistic; she liked to use her own imagination and improvisation. My old friend really surprised me with her hidden talent; she had a Master degree in economics. She should have been to art college; perhaps she could have become a famous painter.
In the old days, art subjects and careers were frown upon by parents who saw no future in terms of career or economic security. Most families would tell their children to become medical doctors, accountants and engineers. Arts and music were considered as irrelevant to a secured and successful career path. Luckily, parents are much more open minded about their children’s education plans and career paths. Some families give full support to their children’s choices of career path. But traditional Chinese families still regard artistic and musical careers as bad choices.
I was very impressed by my friend’s effort to follow her hidden artistic inclination. She did not have any lessons; she just bought all the instruments and went ahead with drawing and painting. She couldn’t paint non-abstract pictures so she started by using painting by numbers as a starter.
I really like the old abstract drawings with post-impressionist style in which my friend used postcards as a guide. I could not draw or paint at all; I failed my art subject at school. So,her daring and ability really overwhelmed me and made me a little envious of her persistence to follow this hobby.
I slowly looked at each of the drawing and painting; I tried to imagine how I would even begin to actually draw and paint on blank paper or canvas. It all seemed very frightening to me; I would feel bad for spoiling the whole canvas. Perhaps I would be brave enough to try to draw and paint with crayons one day.
เมื่อเดือนก่อนเราพึ่งไปเยี่ยมเพื่อนเก่าที่บ้าน หลังจากไม่ได้เจอกันปีหนึ่ง ตอนล็อกดาวน์หลายเดือนทุกคนก็อยู่แต่ในบ้าน เพราะกลัวว่าจะติดไวรัสโคโรนากันง่ายๆ บ้านเพื่อนเก่าก็อยู่กันคนละมุมเมืองเลย ต้องใช้เวลาเดินทางเกือบหนึ่งชั่วโมง แต่เราเคยไปเยื่ยมบ้านเพื่อนตั้งแต่สมัยก่อน ตอนนี้เพื่อนได้ปรับปรุงและสร้างบ้านให้รองรับกับจำนวนคนในบ้าน บ้านเพื่อนก็เปลี่ยนไปมาก มีสระว่ายน้ำอยู่หลังบ้าน และมีตึกหลังใหม่เพิ่ม และยังมีห้องยิมสำหรับออกกำลังกายด้วย เราทึ่งมากที่เขาช่างออกแบบให้ทุกอย่างที่ต้องการ สามารถเข้าไปอยู่รวมกันได้ในที่จำกัด เขาใช้พื้นที่ได้ดีมากทีเดียว คุ้มทุกตารางนิ้ว ต้นไม้ใหญ่ก็ยังคงอยู่รอบบ้าน โรงรถก็เก็ยึรถยนต์ได้หลายคัน เรานึกภาพไม่ออกว่าคนขับเอารถเจ้าไปจอดในที่แคบๆได้อย่างไร
เพื่อนก็พาเราเดินดูรอบบ้าน ห้องยิมอยู่ชั้นสองของตึกที่มีห้องเก็บจักรยานอย่างดี โดยแขวนมาจากฝาผนัง และมีกล่องเครื่องมือช่างหลายกล่อง บ้านนี้มีนักบินอาชีพสองคนและมีช่างเครื่องยนต์ด้วย ขาดแต่หมอกับนักกฎหมาย เราขึ้นไปดูห้องยิม ก็สังเกตเห็นรูปภาพสีน้ำมันวางอยูบนหลังตู้เก็บของ เราจึงรู้ว่าเพื่อนเก่าของเราแอบซุ่มวาดรูปและเขียนภาพสีน้ำมันมาสักพักหนึ่งแล้ว เราแปลกใจมากที่เพื่อนได้เอาพลังความสร้างสรรค์ภายในออกมา ทำให้เรารู้ว่าเขาเป็นศิลปินในจิตวิญญาณ เขาพึ่งได้ค้นพบความสามารถพิเศษของตนเอง น้องชายได้ขอยืมภาพเขียนเกือบสามสิบภาพไปแต่งร้านอาหารที่พึ่งเปิดใหม่ เพื่อนแอบเขียนภาพเงียบๆมาหลายเดือนแล้ว
เราก็ขอดูภาพเขียนและภาพสีน้ำมันทั้งหมดที่เหลืออยู่ในบ้าน เราชอบภาพเขียนแบบไร้โครงสร้างของเพื่อน เป็นภาพที่ตามแบบภาพบ้านและสวนของโมเน่จิตกรที่มีชื่อเสียงของฝรั่งเศส เพื่อนเราไม่เคยเรียนศิลปะและได้ศึกษามาทางเศรษฐศาสตร์ เราก็คิดว่าเขามีความกล้าหาญมากในการวาดภาพตามจินตนาการ และลงสีตามที่ชอบใจ เราคงไม่กล้าทำอะไรแบบนี้ เพราะเราคงกลัวทำลายกระดาษและผืนผ้าใบ เพื่อนเขาขอบวาดภาพแบบไม่มีฟอร์มมากกว่าภาพเหมือนของจริง เราก็สนุกกับการชมภาพเขียนของเพื่อนอยู่เกือบชั่วโมงกว่าๆ แล้วเราค่อยไปดื่มน้ำชากันในบ้าน เราคิดไม่ถึงว่าเพื่อนจะมาค้นพบความสามารถที่ถูกซ่อนไว้ในภายหลัง นี่ถ้าเขาได้รับการสนับสนุนตั้งแต่ตอนเป็นเด็ก เขาอาจจะกลายเป็นศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียงก็ได้
สมัยก่อนพ่อแม่ไม่สนับสนุนการเรียนศิลปะและดนตรี เพราะจะทำให้ชีวิตไม่มั่นคงและไม่มั่งคั่ง ปัจจุบันพ่อแม่เริ่มเห็นคุณค่าของการสนับสนุนให้เด็กๆเรียนศิลปะมากกว่าแต่ก่อน แต่พ่อแม่ก็ยังอยากให้ลูกโตขึ้นเป็นหมอ หรือวิศวกร และมีงานทำเพื่อชีวิตที่มั่นคง เราคิดว่าคนรุ่นใหม่จะมีความท้าทายมากมายในอนาคต โลกเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามกาลเวลาจริงๆ
After our tea break, we walked around the house to check on the trees. The old cat could not recognise me and ran away. My friend gave me two fruit trees. I noticed same numbers on different cars!
My old friend had surprised me with all her drawings and paintings. She never told me about her recent hobby. The afternoon was thoroughly enjoyable and I had learned something new; it is never too late to start doing something new and challenging. The fun and excitement lie in the first step of a new experience.
