My mind kept going back to the old tree I saw on my way to King Taksin Shrine on the other side of the river several months ago. The old tree attracted my attention in first sight but I was in a hurry to get to King Taksin Shrine before closing time. So I quickly took a few photos and told the tree that I would be back for a long chat some other day. I still haven’t fulfilled my promise; that’s probably why I kept seeing this tree in my mind every so often when I was quietly doing nothing. So, I had to make a post about him, I felt that this tree represented a grand old man, I would called him Mr. Tee the wanderer.

I was quite taken aback by the roots of the tree which seemed to be trying to hold on to the earth for fear of falling backward. The way the road encroached upon the space around the tree made me felt very suffocated. I could never understand these people’s inability to have the common devise that the tree needed earth all around the trunk as that the roots could breathe.

Somehow Mr. Tee was a real survivor and tried his best to grow and become stronger despite the awful living conditions. I looked at him with much sympathy and respect for his wisdom and fighting spirit. He has been standing there for over two hundreds years. So he must have know the old King Taksin who used to walk along this alley on the old days. Mr. Tee stood right in front of the temple where the King came to sit meditation everyday. History textbook said the king sat meditation too much that he became crazy and thought he had become a Buddha. So, the king forced everyone to treat him and pay homage to him as if he was a new Buddha on the land. Even all the monks had to pay respect to the king. Those who refused or challenged the King’s Buddha status were either punished or thrown into jail.

I did wonder whether Mr. Tee could tell me the story of what had really happened. There were historical records of King Taksin traveling to make merits and perform religious ceremonies at other temples during the same time in which he was suppose to go crazy. There was another story about how he faked his madness so that he would be punished and all the debts which he raised for the military campaign for independence could be wiped off. The new King of Siam did not enter into the contract so this would release the country from enormous financial burden.
I had no idea which one was the true story unless Mr. Tee was kind enough to tell me the truth.
