Our boat trip towards Si Phraya Pier and River City. We didn’t have the time to visit IconSiam later that day. But we would be going there during the Chinese New Year celebration.
We took the express boat from Sathorn Pier towards Si Phraya Pier near River City, where participants of SteemFest4 got on to their evening cruise on the river. How time flies! So, it has been two years since I sent off some friends at River City. The weather was nice and sunny making the ten minutes’ walk from River City to the location of the oldest banking building very enjoyable. The funny thing was that my friend was supposed to be the guide as she said she had been in this area before. But it turned out that I knew this district better and became the guide for the day. I couldn’t believe that I made my friend walked from late morning till after dusk! We started at River City and ended up in the old part of Chinatown. It was a very nice and gentle walking tour of the old part of Bangkok which we both wanted to see. These places might not be there in ten years’ time.
The Siam Commercial Bank is the oldest Thai bank with its first office building by Chao Phraya River in Talad Noi (means ‘small market’) which is very close to Chinatown. The expansion of foreign trade and diplomatic relations during the Reign of King Rama IV, there was an urgent need to have a sort of banking system. The first foreign bank, the Hong Kong Shianghai Bank, was the first foreign bank operating in Siam. During the Reign of King Rama V, the first Siamese bank was registered and opened in Bangkok which has become Siam Commercial Bank.
The building was designed by the Italian designer called Annibale Rogotti during 1908-1910. This old building is now a listed building by the Fine Arts Department as an ancient monument. The building had undergone a big renovation in 1995. People could visit the bank and its garden during office hours. There’s ample car park inside the ground but it’s more convenient to take the express boat then take ten minutes walk towards the direction of the Holy Rosary Church next to the bank. The sharp spire of the church could be spotted easily. There are lots of street food stalls in this walking street area. So, we could enjoy some snacks and Thai sweets before going into the bank’s garden.
There are a few old trees inside the ground; a very large and old banyan tree stands handsomely in the garden by the river. This tree must have been there from the time of the construction of the building. You’ll need more than five people to embrace the tree trunk. There is a shrine for all the tree spirits and other invisible spirits living on this tree. Thai people are very superstitious and believe in spirits and the existence of several realms in which different levels of spirits, angels and fairies are assigned their living spaces before their turns of reincarnation. Many lost or wandering spirits who did not go through the opening to the next dimension would remain trapped in this dimension. So, they have to resort to living in big old trees and wait a long time before being called to the portal to the next level or dimension. That’s why people would offer food, sweets, water and flowers to these invisible beings to make their journey more comfortable. The higher level spirits seem to have special power to bless and help people with their health and business problems. That’s why lots of boiled eggs, fruits and Thai sweets including colourful cloths are offered at the shrines in front of old trees quite often. People whose wishes were granted, would come back to show their gratitude and keep the promise of offering a big treat.
สัปดาห์ก่อนเรานัดเจอเพื่อนเก่าที่รู้จักกัน สมัยเป็นนักเรียนอยู่เมืองนอก เพื่อไปเดินเที่ยวแถวตลาดน้อยกัน เราดีใจะมากที่สามารถติดต่อเพื่อนเก่าที่ไม่ได้เจอกันมานาน เพื่อนคนนี้ทำอาหารเก่งมาก เคยทำอาหารให้เรากินสมัยเป็นนักเรียน และเราเคยขอให้เขาช่วยทำอาหารในงานปาร์ตี้ของเรา โดยเราไปจ่ายของสดมาแล้วให้เพื่อนทำอาหารเลี้ยงเพื่อนอีกยี่สิบคน ความทรงจำสมัยเป็นนักเรียนนี่สนุกมากเลย แต่ก็ไม่สามารถหวนเวลากลับไปในอดีตได้ ก็น่าเสียดายที่เราห่างเพื่อนเก่าไปหลายคน ต่างคนต่างแยกย้ายไปทำงานมีครอบครัว บางคนก็ไปด้านการเมือง บ้างก็เป็นใหญ่เป็นโตในราชการ บ้างก็ยุ่งอยู่กับครอบครัว เรานัดเจอเพื่อนที่ท่าเรือสาทร เพื่อนั่งเรือด่วนไปลงมี่ท่าเรือสี่พระยา แล้วเดินไปทางริเวอร์ซิตี้ อีกประมาณสิบนาทีก็ถึงธนาคารแห่งแรกในเมืองสยาม

เราชอบนั่งเรือมากเพราะได้อากาศสดชื่น และเห็นวิวสองข้างแม่น้ำด้วย พอถึงท่าเรือสี่พระยาก็เดินเล่นแถวนั้นและถ่ายรูปก่อน จึงเดินไปที่ริเวอร์ซิตี้ ตอนนี้ที่นั่นเงียบเหงามาก เพราะไม่มีรถทัวร์นักท่องเที่ยวมาเลย ร้านอาหารแถวนั้นก็ออกจะซบเซา เดินผ่านร้านขายอาหารไปเรื่อยจนผ่านหน้าโบสถ์ที่มียอดสีเหลืองๆ เราก็จะเห็นทางเข้าธนาคารไทยพาณิชย์ เขาเปิดให้คนเข้าไปใช้บริการตามเวลาทำงานปกติ เราก็พากันเดินเข้าไปในบริเวณสวนที่ติดแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา
ในสวนมีต้นไทรขนาดใหญ่มาก เราคิดว่าน่าจะมีอายุมากกว่าร้อยปี คนห้าคนก็โอบไม่รอบ เราคิดว่าคงมีมาตั้งแต่สมัยก่อนที่สร้างตึกนี้ในสมัยรัชกาลที่5 นี่เป็นสาขาแรกของธนาคารของคนไทยที่ตั้งขึ้นในปี 2449. ช่างที่ออกแบบตึกเป็นชาวอิตาเลียนที่ออกแบบสถานที่ราชการและวังหลายแห่งในสยาม นายช่างชื่อ อันนิบาลิ ริก็อดติ อาคารนี้สร้างระหว่างปี 2449-2450. ต่อมามีการบูรณะซ่อมแซมครั้งใหญ่ในปี 2538. เราซื้อขนมไทยไปนั่งกินริมแม่น้ำที่นั่นด้วย ว่างๆเราจะไปนั่งปิคนิคที่นั่นอีก บรรยากาศริมแม่น้ำดีมาก
By the river bank, another old banyan tree stands alone watching some digging work in the river. It seemed the construction project of a new wall has decided to preserve the old tree.
I did have a small picnic in the garden as I bought some Thai sweets (banana in brown sugar syrup) to be enjoyed among the good vibes. This garden is such a nice place to have my tea break and a picnic!
