In April, 1999. The Nigeria Government established the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) with the aim to organise all space science and technology related activities. In June, 2001 the National Space policy and programmes was approved, thereby creating an enabling environment for the achievement of the Nigeria space agenda.
NASRDA embarked on a technical initiative by building know-how amongst Nigeria engineers and scientists in space technology. This resulted in the launching of the first Nigeria satellite called NigeriaSat-1.
To enhance Nigeria compliance with Information and communication Technology (ICT). NigCom-Sat-1 was launched and this happens to be the Nigerian second satellite as first communication satellite and was launched on May13, 2007.
It is a product of advanced technology in microsatellite, operating in low Earth orbit.
It is 100kg in weight.
It is in company with six satellites, and this gives it added advantage of global coverage.
It has the facilities to solve local problems.
It provides opportunities for capacity building in technology, which aid in the training of some Nigeria engineers.
NigeriaSat-1 is for Earth's observation. Earth's observation refers to its operation of photo and image taking on Nigeria piece of land on which it is focused and beam them back to the ground station for use in various areas of socioeconomic development.
