To achieve social progress the people of a country should contribute to the work produced in the country. For some countries this will mean a change in culture towards work. For others, it may mean having more creative people engaged in technology. Therefore, focus on productivity, get everyone producing something, and at least producing for their sustenance.
Looking at rankings of countries by employment rate, the top 30 countries of this list are above the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average employment rate score. The top 10 technologically advanced countries are also in that top 30 employment rates.
The Republic of Ireland, ranking 21st on the said world employment rate list also ranks 13th on the World Social Progress Index Ranking. Ireland has had many political struggles and economic troubles because of the politics but have been seeing economic improvements especially due to attracting foreign investment for their Mining, Pharmaceutical and Software and ICT industries. Ireland is the largest European producer of zinc and the second largest lead producer in Europe.
Ireland’s workforce has an engaged majority enabling its citizens on a whole to earn resources that they leverage for better standards of living. Hence, they have been able to rank higher in Social Progress Rankings than USA, which ranks at 7th on the top 10 technologically advanced countries.
So, comparing countries on world rankings by employment and social progress, I have to conclude that a culture of working hard or strong work ethic among citizens translate into their social progress. The social progress is also influenced by the type of governance or leadership the country has.
