How long had it been since Blaire kicked them out of his grocery store and told them they were banned? One week, two weeks, or had it been a month? Jenny had lost track of time. Surely it couldn't have been more than two weeks ago... but, in that case, there would be more food in the pantry.

They had the basics in there. Flour, rice, some pasta that had possibly been in there since the days of Joey's dear old aunt... but other than that, the shelves were looking pretty bare. And they had no bread. She would kill for some hot toast with a thick slathering of butter right about now.

Did she have enough to make some bread? She listlessly moved rusty cans from side to side and hunted through old packagings. There was the flour, of course, a small container of sugar, powdered milk... she wrinkled her nose. Gross, but that would do. Did you even need milk in a bread recipe? Whatever. She would wing it. But there was no yeast.

She had heard stories of weird families hiding sourdough starters in the back of their pantries. That some people had even passed it on down the ages and had 200 year old goop sitting back there... but it appeared that Joey's aunt hadn't been one of them.

"Hey! Watcha doing?"

Jenny jumped and banged her head against the cupboard door.

"Ouch!" She rubbed at her face and glared at Joey. "Trying to find food. So we can eat. And not die. It's not like we can just go to the grocery store anymore."

Joey threw a teatowel at her head and grinned.

"Sure we can!" he laughed. "You know what we need? Disguises!"

Jenny bundled up the teatowel and heaved it back at Joey, missing him by an inch.

"Disguises?" she grunted.

"Yes! Disguises." Joey ran his eyes up and down her and placed a contemplative hand on his hip. "We need to dye your hair black. I've got some glasses you can wear. Goth makeup! That'd be hot! No one would recognise you."

Jenny closed her eyes and took a deep breath. There was no bloody way.

"How about you wear the disguise instead?" She forced a sweet smile and fluttered her eyelashes. "Only, we shave off all of those curls of yours and tattoo your skull?"

Hellooooo! 😄

It's Day 1600 of mariannewest@mariannewest's five minute freewrite challenge.

Today I picked yesterday's prompt which was "yeast"... wrote with the 5 minute timer then spent another 10 minutes or so tidying it up. 😊

In April I'll be doing a Maynia-esque, March-Madness-esque, Writing-Madness-esque, NaNoWriMo-styled extravaganza for myself! A full month of a continuous Joey and Jenny story.

I must get back into her head and find inspiration. Stop. Freewrite time! 😄
